Figure this one out!! 600RR F5

OK folks, I got a bad problem and all I get from my riding buddies is could be this could be that

I have a 2005 600RR. I got the bike with low miles and it runs great. However it now has about 10,000 miles on it. Around the 8500 mile mark I started hearing a little rattle like noise coming from the engine. Especially when I was riding. Off the bike as it passes it was not so obvious. It's like a vibration rattle but it got louder and started at lower RPMs as time went on. I changed the oil and that helped but it still kicks in at 5100 RPMs. As long as I'm under that it makes no noise at all. The minute I cross that line it starts and does not go away until I bring the RPMs down. I have also noticed some of the top end went away. Before it started I was getting around 176 on top with it and now it tops at around 164.

Any and all help on figuring this one out???

Sounds like a timing chain. When you are accellerating, try letting off the gass slightly to see if you get a tiny bit of accelleration just as you let off the throttle. That wou;d mean it's really bad. If that happens, stop riding it until you fix it.
But I'm more conserned that you let someone else ride your bike past you. You must be very rich or have some kick ass insurance to let someone else ride that thing.

It was the owner of the cycle shop in town. He did mention something about the timing chain but just seemed like he wanted some money. He was also in front of my house. But yea I'm with you on the idea of someone else ridin MINE!!!! Would the timing chain kill some of my top end like that? And kinda funny thought, I use to live in Campbell, CA

Ya, I think it would effect your top end since it changes the valve timing. Again, this is just a guess. If you plan on keeping this one, I strongly suggest you buy a real Honda workshop manual. You can get it at www.Helminc.com .
You can check it out yourself with only a few tools.
Where in Campbell did you live?

Thanks for all the help, and yea I plan on keeping it. And it doesn't get a little jump of speed that I can tell. Just the noise. I'll order the book today. And check it out.

timing chain = cam chain?

just curious because mine also needs adjustment and i'm hearing the same sound too. but i'm told it's a cam chain...

Timing Chain, Cam Chain, same thing. Drives the cam gears to turn the cams to move the valves, etc.
