my f3 did almost the same thing. I forgot the name of the part but it was the little computer box attached to the frame when you remove the tail fairings

Tom,

Don't throw in the towel yet, although these types of things can be frustrating to go through; it's not an uncommon experience when you first start out to have to deal with this type of stuff. It does have the benefit of helping you to develop your debug / investigative skills which will be valuable all of your life. Once you get to a point that you can afford newer bikes that you typically won't have many problems with, you will still be able to use the skills and experience you gain from having older, more problematic bikes by helping out your friends that get in the position you were in early in your riding career. Take a deep breath, and keep in mind this old adage "throughout history, millions of people have survived far worse situations than you have right now, and they lived to tell about it" so don't sweat it bro, things will get better.

Re: I NEED HELP NOW

F2's are notorious for problems like this. For starters, make sure you keep both battery cables tight at all ends. A loose positive cable can cause many of the problems you describe by causing the regulator/rectifier to fail, which typically causes it to overcharge and thus ruins the battery. The end result is a bike that frequently needs recharging (especially when low RPM's are frequent) or it might explode underneath you like mine did (50 miles out in the mountians ). The stock reg/rect can barely power the high beam at 4000 rpm so avoid them if they dont havea HUGE heat sink!!!! So there, the bad news is out of the way. Also, the F2 and many sport bikes electrical systems are powered from the battery and not the charging system like a car. I'm really suprised your bike kept running when you pulled the +12v cable as it shouldnt have... this might be insight to a shorting Reg/Rect again as that might overcharge and cause the system to stay running.

The good news is that a high quality reg/rect ($90) with the huge metal cooling fins can power two H4 bulbs and accessories while putting around all day if the rest of the system is in good shape.

You won't believe this, but the regulator/rectifier will run COOLER with the high beam on. Its not a linear type regulator. Its a zener/SCR type. It shunts all unused power back to the coils. The coil runs hot all the time, if its used or not.

Re: I NEED HELP NOW

Yep, completely agree. I only make big deal about the Huge heat sink so that people dont buy the cheap one and continue having problems. The high beam doesnt require more voltage, but more amperage. The problem with the stock design is the regulation where excess voltage is shorted off, which generates heat, which the stock regulator doesnt dissapate well. The only good thing about buying a $25 cheap one is having a backup reg/rect stored on the bike... just in case!

Have a part number? I'd like to file it away for future reference since I've heard that having them go is almost as certain as death, taxes, and F4i CCT problems. I have no problem with paying for a good one.

Re: I NEED HELP NOW

I bought mine on ebay for a little over $100 but you can get them other places as well. The japanese manufacturer is escaping me at the moment with a part number of sh693-12 . I cant rave enough about this one in particular as it allows me to run additional lighting and accessories without ever having a discharge anymore (was a huge problem with other reg/rects). I almost went down the path of a heavy duty stator but now know the stock one is more than enough. I've heard that honda has a stock replacement that is different now which also has a heat sink and that they fail less frequently than stock but cost the same as the one above.

The box looks like this:

Try Electrex USA if you don't want to deal with the eBay hassle. I think they have changed their name though. You will probably pay a few extra bucks but at least you know you will get it and that it is new. Not to mention, you know they will help and who to call.
