new ride'er needs electrical help

ok ill give you a rundown of what I need to know any why. I just got my Honda cbr 600 f2 and with in a week I was having a prob. I found out the the regulator was bad so I got another with in 2 days of riding it was doing it again so I checked the regulator that I just put in and that was now bad as well. I pulled the alternator (witch is what the service manual calls it) and I found out that a clip between the alternator and the regulator was melted the burnt to hell. I changed that out and I want to make shur that the alternator is still good. so id like to know when the bike is running if I take the 3 yellow wires off the regulator what amount of volts shud it be pushing if any.

Re: new ride'er needs electrical help

Unfortunately, the F2 commonly has regulator/rectiefier issues, specifically resulting in low rpm undercharging, higher rpm over charging and many time a burnt plug. Unlike a car, the bike runs off the battery and the charging system only charges the battery, sending any additional voltage/current to ground... and generating heat. The Only time I've seen an F2 with a bad stator (or alternator as you called it) is when the bike was dropped and debris shorted out the wire, or the bike severely overheated and the insulation burned away.. and began shorting. The burnt plug seems to be closely related to the stock or stock replacement reg/rect which doesnt have a large heat sink and the cables to the battery were loose or had been that way previously (seems to be the catalyst to developing problems). A high quality reg/rect like the japaneseone sold on eBay and many other quality parts providers for the most part completely eliminate the above problems.
