| What is the best chain lube? Some people have told me Belray is good. Any other suggestions? Btw I have a 99 CBR600 (not that it would make any difference I guess) |

| Re: What is the best chain lube? ahh, i dont really mind the mess as i have to clean it anyway.
I use white lithium grease, my mates were using it for donkey years and i have just started. It flicks sometimes, but dries up when its on the fairings.
Dont know if you get it over there, but i use flash degreaser to get rid of the dirt/grease/marks on my blade, then out comes the polish.. |

WD40 are you kidding? Worst lube ever! It disappears after about a week. I use WD40 to remove grease from my bike, so I do not suggest putting it on a chain! |

| Re: What is the best chain lube? Maxima Crystal Clear or something like that was terrible. I still have the almost full can. It was supposed to be anti-fling and would be cleaning it off for a week after each application and it was a sticky/gooey mess. I went back to using what the manual reccommends (80-90w gear oil) and it flings less and is cleaner. I broke down and bought a bottle of Maxima Chain Wax last week and just fully cleaned the chain tonight and applied the wax. It is drying in the garage right now. I have heard that it does not fling but that it is harder to clean it off when the time comes. I used to use a chain wax product on my bicycle and really liked it. Much cleaner.

| Re: What is the best chain lube? Update: Now that I actually have actually used the Maxima Chain Wax I can say that I like it better than anything I have tried so far. It needs to be applied a little more often but is much cleaner.

You all know that gear oil has a distinct , pungent smell to it. This is exactly what Honda Pro chain lube smells like. They add a tacking agent to it and put it in aerosol form.
No matter what you use remember that most lubes are best applied on a warm chain and left to cool.
On the subject of chains- does it pay to remove the chain now and then and give it a real good soaking and cleaning? Is it a big deal to remove the chain? |

I think they have recommended Yamahas among others . The dealer here uses Silkolene |

| Re: What is the best chain lube? it's all ok stuff really. some makes less mess and that seems to be a plus. but it's just chain lube man. the importantant thing is that you do lube your chain every 1 or 2 tanks of fuel run |

Yup - big deal. Modern bikes with big horses don't run a master link so u gotta break & re-rivet the chain to remove. That used to be the way in the old days - clean the chain then boil in Duckhams Chain Grease. But that became obsolete when o-ring chains came out (when I was a boy!) |

| Re: What is the best chain lube? ummm, there seems to be shitloads of stuff available & no clear winner. I wouldn't go with gear oils even though they do have the EP additives hence the smell. Buy one of the specific sprays, just make sure that they are designed for use with o-ring chains if u have one - most bikes except pizza delivery bikes do. They are designed to be extremely thin initially (so that they can try & penetrate the o-ring seals)then thicken up after a short while. They contain magic additives like EP (Extreme Pressure) & tackiness additives to prevent them flinging off at speed. I go with the Castrol chain wax suggested at the beginning. Does not need frequent reapplication (every 2 tankfulls!), sticks like **** to a rug & is white in colour - very clean unless you have the shakes cos u drank too much & spray everything besides the chain - then it's tricky to remove from unwanted places.
Whatever u decide make sure it's good for 2 reasons. Most important one is your wallet. U checked the prices of chain & sprockets?!!! Also remember that you can't mix new & worn parts so u normally change them as a set otherwise the old part will damage the new - especially true if the old is the sprocket(s) & the new is the chain - u just torched your money. The other is if u r on the track or a fast road ride, losing the chain can have serious consequences - last happened to me in about 1973 & I will never let it happen again! |

| Re: What is the best chain lube? yes every 2 tanks of fuel or so is a good chain oil interval. the manual says 200 miles i think. 2 tanks is further than that. i understand letting it go for 3 or 4 tanks but if you go a couple weeks or a month and a thousand miles and think it's not time to oil your chain yet. then i disagree |
