Re: that damn steering stem I have checked the bearings and they seem to be in good condition. The upper or lowerspacer for the steering stem seem to not seat correctly.

Re: that damn steering stem Something definitely out of place JJ. Since it was apart when you got it, could a spacer plate or something be missing? Very critical area so maybe a shop manual would help. You mentioned you tightened everything down as much as you could. Should only be the one nut on the top of the stem that gets tightened to make your bearing adjustment.

Re: that damn steering stem It sounds like perhaps your races are not seated properly, however they don't usually move upon disassembly. Were they replaced? Sometimes they become misaligned during installation and trap the resultant metal shavings under themselves. Meaning they need to be removed in order to get them to ever seat right...if they are your problem. Good luck!

Re: that damn steering stem No everything is as it should be as far as parts are concerned. The races are clean and clear of metal shavings. I can not seem to get the bottom race and bearing to move down enough to let the top get in the proper position. The top spacer s just not in the correct posiotion in the steering stem channel.
