I have an RC51 and an 01 f4i. I primarily use the bike for commuting but you got enough juice to have some fun. I have to say it is a very comfortable bike compared to the RC.

Re: i am thnking about buying a 01" f4i

I liked mine VERY MUCH. Depending on what you're looking for in a bike, the 01-03 F4i is a really good bike and fairly sporty. Yes, one of the new Double-Rs will beat it hands down in terms of specs, but those F4is are great bikes. The newer model of the F4i has been "dumbed down" a little bit, kinda like a Yamaha YZF600R "Thundercat" compared to a YZF-R6. I rode my buddy's 07 and while I didn't notice any obvious difference in performance from my 01, I noticed that the newer ones have a single banana seat (01 had split seat like most bikes) and the clip-ons were higher, so you're not in as sporty of a riding position as the earlier models.

Oh, and yes, the big banana seat may look kinda dorky compared to the sporty split-seats. But you know what? Take a girl for a ride on the back of it and see what she thinks. She's gonna be a lot more willing to ride with you on a big comfy seat like that compared to a 600RR.

yeah im not really in to the whole banana seat thing. i really like the 01's but does anyone thing its gonna be reliable. it has 20k miles on it. im not sure how long an engine last, ive never owned one for more than 12k miles so im not sure if i will be blowing a hole in my pocket or not.

I don't see why it wouldn't be reliable. Unless you see/hear something on the bike that gives you reason to believe there are problems with the engine, just make sure it's serviced recently (ask for records) or right after you get it. Motorcycle engines last a long time with proper care. People just don't realize it because the rest of the bike gets smashed into splinters long before the engine ever gives out.

As for the whole in your pocket, I'd put away enough cash to take care of things like the major service on it (forget if it's at 16K or 20K) if there aren't any service records for the bike, a cam chain tensioner (just in case), and of course, tires, sprockets, and a chain. On the last three items, even if they are fine now, you'll end up replacing them sooner than you think. Nothing against the bike...those items just wear out on pretty much all bikes, and it doesn't matter if the tires lasted 5,000 miles or the chain lasted 15,000 miles, when it comes time to replace it, it still seems a lot sooner than it should be!

Re: i am thnking about buying a 01" f4i

I have an '02, I got it because it is one of my favorite bikes from a pure style standpoint (check my gallery), and yet was reviewed very favorably. Both the '01 and '02's were given the bike of the year awards for the 600's those years. It isn't fair to compare them to the newer bikes. Compare the '01 F4i to the '01 GSX-R or '01 R6, you will find it is the better bike. The new RR's have a completely different feel to them that is very track friendly, I have ridden them and like them but they aren't as comfortable. I have done hundreds of miles in a day on my F4i and also use it for a daily commuter. It dynos at about 96-98hp at the rear wheel depending on the dyno. In a straight line it will still hang with almost any 600 up to the '06's. It won't beat them but it will hang with them. It runs a faster 1/4 mile than the '03RR's, but like I said earlier is not as track friendly. The RR will definitely handle better, and all things equal will still go around a track faster. I was able to pick mine up with only 600 miles on it when it was 4 years old. There wasn't a mark on it. The new F4i's are a bit "softer" and lose some style with the bananna seat. With all that said I am thinking about upgrading to a 600RR or an 848 this year. I have no complaints about the F4i at all, just planning to start riding less and spend more time on the track so I'm looking for a more "focused" bike. I'd offer you a good deal on mine but I still haven't decided for sure since I do like it so much.
