white smoke

hi,
i have a 95 (ish) 600 F3
when i start the bike untill it warms up between 2 and 4.5 thousand revs , i get a very light white smoke out the exhaust. (akraphovic) (if i rev it harder there is no smoke)

i am not sure if it is just moisture buring off, or if it is a bigger problem.

anyone with any hints on if i should be worried or not can you please let me know.

thanks

Re: white smoke

If it's a small amount of smoke, and it goes away after the engine is warmed up, it is probably normal. Does the smoke have a sweet smell? That can indicate coolant being burned, which could be a blown head gasket. Check your oil for white foam, which is also another indicator of a blown head gasket. If still in doubt, check the compression...

Re: white smoke

Re: white smoke

If it dissipates/disappears quickly, then it is probably just condensation/steam, and not smoke; and finally..."if still in doubt, check the compression."

Re: white smoke

Where is the bike stored over night?

Do you let it idle and warm up or thrash it to warm it?

Re: white smoke

bike is stored indoors, in a small building, i wash it down with the hose after every ride as it's salty here this time of year....

my choke doesn't work so i hold it at about 3-4,000 revs untill it will idle at 2,000 then let it warm it's self up from there

Re: white smoke

In truth every rider would be better off if their choke was broke and they had to manually warm the engine. Don't believe me...go to the race track and watch tuners warm cold engines.

Hmm, i was brought up and taught that you should never thrash a cold engine as the oil wouldnt have been able to get up in time.

I agree sometimes i open my 954 before the choke has fully kicked out, but thats a rare occasion. I usually start it up and let it idle until the revs drop, then its ready

Re: white smoke

There is a big difference in thrashing an engine and warming it up correctly. I always warm my street and race engines with the choke off. A choke or enrichener is there to start the engine, not to keep it running while you put on your gear, walk the dog, pay bills, take the trash out, have a smoke and then drive away.

Btw i dont smoke

And erm, no what i meant is as its an auto choke, i just allow the bike to do its own thing and also for the temp display to come on as i pop my gloves/helmet on.

Its just something i do and have always done.

Re: white smoke

My 2007 smokes until it gets to about 120 degrees. however being fuel injected there is no choke but I have been told not to ride until eng temp is 120. Dont know if this is true but its what I go by.

Hmm, After reading into it, ive learned that the new fuel injected bikes DO not have a choke on them, it just revs higher to warm the engine up quicker?
