Buying a F3, voltage rectifier taken out

I'm going to check out an F3 and the guy told me that he had the 'ol voltage rectifier problem, and his mechanic just got rid of the rectifier, which i guess (i'm not technically savvy) means that he wired the distributor directly to the battery. anyways, he claims the bike runs fine since.

Does this make any sense? (maybe i just misunderstood). On quick check of posts here i haven't seen anyone suggest this solution. if this solution is possible, doesn't it lead to too much charge, and what problems could that cause?

thanks a lot guys!

The stock reg/rect is a POS. They are inadequite as delivered stock. Tour Max is sold via other names all over the place for about 100 bucks. Well worth the money, huge heat sink, charges the battery at idle rather than 5k rpm as stock. Its in a black box with red letters and ebay sells them as the premium Japanese replacement. You cant go wrong, just replace it.
