| 02 f4i won't start my problem seems similar to the other dozen 'won't start' threads, but I've tried most of the recommendations that apply to my situation:
i drove my bike to work monday morning (about 20 miles) and it ran fine. i went to leave that afternoon it wouldn't start.
the 1st time i tried it it sounded like a short (it rained heavily here) so i disconnected the battery and found some exposed wire on the power commander, i cleaned this up and cleaned the crud off the terminals and hooked it back up.
now the bike will try to start and engage the starter, but the engine won't fire. (it sounds like its cranking)
the feul pump primes, i charged the battery, all the fuses are ok.
the one problem i found was when checking the far left and right plug wires was no voltage. anyone know what voltage should be seen here when cranking the engine?
thanks in advance |

| Re: 02 f4i won't start well I'll take a crack from a basic perspective.
You say its turning over but not firing.
To fire we need spark, fuel, air.
You said it's getting fuel, i'd pull the plugs (all at once, don't want it to fire up when testing this) one at a time ground the plug to the frame with it hooked to the battery. When you turn it over is there spark? If yes are the plugs fouled/wet melted? If no you will have to correct that.
From an air perspective check to see that all hoses are routed correctly and hooked up the right way. I once installed my tank with one of the drain hoses hooked up incorectly and that was the issue. |

| Re: 02 f4i won't start i unhooked the wires that clip to the spark plugs and put them up to the multimeter and got 2.2 volts readout when cranking...shouldn't it be a few hundread volts?
update: it started 3 separate times and half idled for about 3 seconds each time. after this puffs of white smoke came out of the tank.
i tried testing plug 3 and 4 in the harness and neither fired, but one of the plugs did when i put it in a car...

| Re: 02 f4i won't start how many ingnition coils on a cbr600? if it's 2, they probably run 2 cylinders each. To test just swap the coils (I assume they are identical, check manual) and check for spark in the respective heads ie. 1&4 vs 2&3 or however they are wired. It sounds like your bike is half fireing and this will tell you if it's indeed the coil. Hope that make sense. |

| Re: 02 f4i won't start The service manual says when you crank it, it should be 100v minimum at the coil, but it should be tested with a "peak voltage adapter" for your multimeter, whatever that means.
FWIW the F4i has a single coil for each plug, its actually attached to the plug wire/boot. They call it a "direct ignition coil" or something. (I'm having a somewhat similar problem, but mine doesn't fire at all) |
