need help with 600f4i

hey, i got a 2002 600f4i last week from this guy, and the bike starts up but has clear white smoke coming from the exhaust and unused gas comes from the muffler and the warmer the bike gets the more smoke, and if i give it gas more unused gas comes from the exhaust, after ahwhile the bike does shut off b/c i think there is too much gas in the engine and i looked at the oil it has gas in it. i don't know if its the fuel regulator that needs changed or what. could someone give me some advice thanks b/c the bike is just sitting in the garage.

Re: need help with 600f4i

i just recently bought a 2002 f4i that had been sitting for 3 years.

the varnished gas had gummed up the fuel pump AND the fuel pressure regulator on the return end. there are 2 ways to test your FPR.. remove the return line back to the tank & turn the key on.

you should have gas shoot out of this line just by turning the key on.. if it doesn't your FPR is gummed up. if no gas shoots out, take the FPR off the fuel rail & hold your finger up to the fitting to create the vacuum. it should be everything you can do to hold your finger there to prevent gas from coming out(which it still will b/c of the pressure).

the idea is to verify gas can & will return to the tank if its not being used. mine had a locked up FPR & created too much pressure for the injectors to handle therefore hydrolocking the cylinders which prevented it from even turning over until we removed the spark plugs from the flooded cylinders & turned the bike over to force that gas out.. be sure to change the oil asap if you have gas in there, dont let it run very long like that.

feel free to PM me if you wish, i just spent a week getting mine running & its all fresh in my mind. i could possibly talk you thru this on the phone or sumin if what i put isn't making sense.

Clear white smoke usually indicates burning coolant. Does it smell sweet? Headgasket then. Fuel is black smoke, oil is a bluish white smoke. If you get more specific I can further diagnose.
