Honda has revealed a prototype CBR600RR fitted with an electronic braking and ABS system that it claims is the first ever designed for a supersport.

The "brake by wire" system is tipped to be introduced on the 2009 CBR600RR. It merges Honda's combined braking system and with an aBS system which Honda says will not detract from the bikes sport riding abilities. The system is going to be on all Honda road going models over 250cc by the year 2010.

The Honda CBS will supply some braking force to the front brake discs whenever the rear brake used, it will not work in the reverse however.

With the new electronics the managed by the ECU the riders inputs are measured and then translated to the hydraulic system via an electric motor..

The system has a bypass which allows the brakes to work as normal hydraulic system when the ignition is off.


I can imagine the fun and games riders are going to have trying to get this dialled in to suit different tracks and ridng styles..

Yep, one of the mags I read monthly had an article about them testing this out. They said that so far it works great...tried to lock up the rear and the system wouldn't let them. Their impression based on the way the system works is that it wouldn't really affect sportriding negatively at all.

From what I gathered from the article, the systems aren't hydraulicly linked at all. Instead, the ECU controls two power units, one for the front, one for the rear. It detects how the wheel is spinning under braking and also how much force is being exerted on the brakes through the hydraulic lines through a couple of valve/sensor setups, and uses the power units to control the valves to apply as much braking pressure can be applied without actually locking up the wheel.

At least, that's what I remember from what I read and saw in the diagrams...

Not sure if I explained it to where other people will understand.

Sounds very interesting. I would like to be able to try this out, of course without having to buy one . I hope it will not be a negative for the new bike. Honda needs to due something special this time around IMO

From what I've read, it'll be an option on all the CBR's by 2010, but if you go for it, it's not something you can turn on and off.

I have ABS on my 07 K1200r-Sport which I ride on the street and the track and am glad I have it. The front came into play twice, once when I was braking for a corner that had a fine layer of sand on the road that I did not notice. The ABS kept the bike straight and still let me break for the turn without any problem. All I felt was a clicking on the brake lever. The other time it was wet and the same thing happen. If I had done that with my 600rr I am not sure if I could have released the brakes in time to stop the lock up and then not sure if I could have made the corner. At the track I have tried several times, using the front brake, to brake from 150 mph as hard as I can, straight line, to see if the ABS would come on but it never did? I have also used both front and rear in the same situation and could feel the rear working but with no problem controlling the bike. All it did was slow down faster.
For the street I think it's a great benefit in stopping in a panic situation or bad conditions. And it only takes one time to save your ass to make it worth the cost. On the track I have seen no reason not to have it?
