Idle Problems with my 1990 CBR 600

Hi guys im new to the sportbike world. I just purchased a used 1990 CRB600 (f1 i belive). My big problem is that it starts up fine on choke and then after its warmed up normmly idles at about 2grand. Drives fine but then when i come to a stop light(not sure if cold or warm has anything to do with it yet) the rpms start to drop slowly. 2g to 1 2g to 1 and then starts to sputter and click dies. normly will fire up the first time but after it dies agian it doesnt liek to start without the choke. its annoying and makes me look so bad trying to get it to start back up. it seems to run fine when actually going but only at a stop it starts to do it. I am an auto mechanic so i do belive that i could fix it my self or diagonise it but this is alot diff than a car. so if anyone could help i would greatly appeciate it.
couple other minor problems are the light behind the speedo isnt very bright hard to see at night anyone know if i can just dissasemble the cluster and put in a new bulb or should i check with an oms meter for resistance?

thanks alot -dave

Hi Ernie,

Not sure about the idling, but yes you can take the cluster off and replace the bulbs...

Cheers

Re: Idle Problems with my 1990 CBR 600

Hi Mate,

Right now i have the same problem with my CBR 125, i adjusted my timer until i couldnt anymore, then i spoke to a mechanic at my garage and the possible answer is your carb, i am handing mine in tomorrow and will let you know what it could be.

i have a 2005 CBR 125 had it 3 years and this problem happened the first year i got it, it was under warranty then and they replaced the carb which cost around 200, looks like this time with no warranty its coming out of my pocket...

Hi Ernie, just got of the phone to my garage and confirmed my worst expectations, it is indeed (in my case) a bad carb, and will need to replace it completley, £££ hope that helps give you a better idea as our symptoms seemed very similar

Re: Idle Problems with my 1990 CBR 600

Another update , the actual problem is due to a piece of metal that has fallen off that the idle pin pushes against to make the accerlaration cable tighter.
I have been told i need a new carb as this is a man made part, but im sure i can weld something on etc, have you checked the area around the idle pin?
