battery or regulator/rectifier problem

Hey guys, so this is my problem

My 1996 CBR F3 will only start in the mornings with a jump from my car, but then the whole rest of the day it starts up and rides just fine! Its just that original first start up has troubles...which makes me think the battery is loosing charge overnight which would be RR troubles. I have been charging the battery up to about 12.8V with my car, and then it will run fine all day. I currently have my newer battery at AutoZone getin sickle charged so that will be on a full charge and hopefully this problem will go away...any thoughts or ideas?????? its such a pain in the ass to take off the side plastics, seat, and battery cover every moning!!! urg lol

any help is very appriciated!!!!!

Re: battery or regulator/rectifier problem

It sounds like your battery is losing it's charge over night. If you can jump it, ride all day on and off, that comes to reason that the RR is doing it's job enough to keep it going as long as the battery is not sitting to long. When it sits overnight it has a longer time, uninterrupted to leak voltage and by the time you get out to fire it up again, it is below the optimal starting volts of ~12.8. Check the volts when you get home, and then check it again in the morning, if you are losing voltage between these two times, it is your battery and has nothing to do with the RR. Which means you need a new battery, so try the one from AutoZone and it should fix the problem.

Re: battery or regulator/rectifier problem

Check w/a multimeter the voltage at the battery at @ 5000 rpm with the full beams on, and see that it's btwn 13.5 -15.5 V (actual numbers will vary for your bike, this is an estimate). This will tell you that the voltage reg/rect is doing its job.

Re: battery or regulator/rectifier problem

Thanks for the replies, I currently have an old battery in it right now, which works when i jump it of course, and I'm going to get the battery from AutoZone tonight. And Ill be sure to check the reading of the battery tonight and compare it to the morning and I'll also check to see if the RR is doin its job then to. Ill let you guys know how it goes! thanks for the help
