My son has a 2003 600 4fi that he's had for a couple months and the other day he and a buddy of his went for a ride in the scorching Texas heat (96d).
When he returned he showed me what looked like burns on his thighs from the tank. We went out to the bike and the lower part of the tank and the
outside frame rails were VERY hot.

He had jeans on, the tank is black, and the bike didn't run above 228d, fan was kicking in and bike ran fine.

Is this something he should worry about or is this just the nature of the beast with this bike?

We are planning a long road trip in September and that could get very uncomfortable on a 500 mile day.

I have a 01 F4i and the heat from the tank can get very warm. I don't believe it should ever get hot enough to burn you through jeans but maybe its possible. I would check under the fuel tank to make sure he has all the insulation there.

If his legs are getting burnt through jeans, imagine what is happening to the fuel in the tank!

Not sure what temp the fan kicks in on a F4i but on my 954RR my legs (when riding in traffic) usually turn a bit red after a good ride.
