'00 CBR600F4 - Electric probs.

So a few weeks ago I accidentally left my key in the ignition and left my lights on (doh). Of course, when I found out my key wasnt in my pocket I later found out my battery was dead.

I tried a few times to compression start it in 2nd gear. The bike tried to start, but just didn't have enough juice to turn over.

I then read online that, as long as you leave the car off, you should have no problems jumping the bike off. So that's what me and my boss did. Let it set on the battery for a few minutes then try a couple times to start it; let it try turn over for a second then leave it alone.

We left it on the battery for another 5 minutes, and it still wouldnt turn over, so I decided to try pushing it one more time since it now had some power in the battery. SUCCESS, it fired up and I revved the engine and it kept purring like a champ.

On the way home, it was riding great no problems, then once I got to the backroads (no streetlights) I noticed the Headlights were a little dim when I was I throttling it, but when I pulled the clutch in, the headlights got a little brighter. I figured no big deal, this must just be because the battery isn't fully charged since it was completely dead.

I got to the bridge where you have to yield to oncoming traffic, so I slowed down to 2nd gear make sure no cars were in my way. When I tried to accelerate up to speed, my bike bogged down, and it sounded like I was flooding the engine or something. I tried giving it more throttle which didn't do anything, so I figured it would be best to take it easy on it, and just go nice and slow till I crested the top of the bridge.

I got over the bridge and then it kicked up speed, and started running good, I took it to 3rd gear and went down the road. When I got the stoplight I slowed down to 2nd gear to make the left turn, and then again my bike bogged down on me again! So at this point, I'm a few blocks away from home, I'm just gonna take it easy and get home. When I got red lights, I kept the engine revving in 1st with the clutch in, just to make sure the bike didn't die on my at an intersection.

When I got home, I put it in neutral, and put the kickstand down and let it idle for a good minute or 2. It idled just fine, just like it usually did, no problems. I revved the engine in neutral, no problems.

I come out a week later to get it started to take to work. I put the key in, and turn it "On"..... no lights.... no power. I'm like "What?? My battery is dead again!? I just got a brand new installed a month ago!"

I borrowed my dad's battery charger (not tinder), and hooked it up. Right when I hooked it up and plugged it in, it showed my battery was fully charged. I figured maybe leave it on there a little bit, then come back just to make sure. Came back out 45 minutes later; the batter was still "Full", but I still had 0 power to my bike when I turned the key on.

I've checked my fuses today, and none of the ones I could see were bad. (I only know where 10s are near the battery).

Any suggestions? I have no mechanical prowess what-so-ever, especially on a motorcycle. This is my first bike.

Switch gear (red cut off switch) may have come corrosion within.

Do you get anything when you turn the key?

No, I got nothing when I turn the key. None of the gauges move, the headlights don't turn on, my mileage doesn't show up.

I didn't try hitting the starter, for fear I might hurt the bike even more.

The engine cut-off switch isn't on either.

Hmmm strange. Have you checked the battery terminals? (Sounds stupid but its a start to eliminate bit by bit)

Check your stator, or get someone to test it out for you. May not be keeping your battery charged and all the electrics are taking the juice form your battery without it being recharged.

Re: '00 CBR600F4 - Electric probs.

Just wanted to give a heads up, I just had a Dead Cell in my battery.

A family friend of one of my friends is a certified bike mechanic and checked it out for me.

So the lesson of the day: Push Starting a bike on a dead battery can mess up your battery, and he also said it could possibly damage your bike's charging system too.

Thankfully my only problem was my battery, which was under warranty, so I'm good to go!
