F3 problem

A friend of mine has a 1996 F3 and since he dropped it doing about 20mph on the right side, there has been a ticking coming from the top of the far left cylinder and sputters real bad over 5,000 RPM he said. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be and did the drop cause it or just "wake up " an existing proplem. (oh he also said that he put synthetic oil in it right before he dropped it, is synthetic oil bad for these older engines he said that he heard it would mess up your bike.)

any imputs would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: F3 problem

Check the plugwires, maybe the ticking is arcing. As for the sputtering, if the plug is not firing it will sputter. The oil should not be a factor.

Re: F3 problem

The only 'synthetic' oils bad for the bike are ones with moly - like the standard Honda HP4.
Definitely check all the plug wires to be sure they are secured. The ticking could be that the cam chain tensioner has gone out. Don't worry, that's a very common thing on F2s and F3s and is a $40 30min job.
Sputtering over 5K could mean the fuel pump and/or relay, the airbox valve, or the plug wires among others.
Check your plug wires first, then report back.

Re: F3 problem

Ok My friends Bike came back from the shop the other day and the ticking was his exhaust leaking from the manifold seals were trashed and i guess the wreck was enough to "jar them loose" also they said that the exhaust leak was causing a backpressure in the head and his valves became "mushroomed" I think the guy is full of crap but that is coming from a guy (me) that does not know the first thing about engine repair. the also said they re shimmed it. well just an update...............
