Servicing Tips For The CBR400

Does anyone have any handy tips to pass on about servicing their baby blade? (maybe this will show up on searches for servicing queries on the interweb and attract new members )

eg......
getting spark plugs out..
adjusting carbs (ie having small girly hands so you can reach without taking the carbs off!)
easy ways to adjust things..

that kind of thing......

Re: Servicing Tips For The CBR400

Hi Amarsidhu, and to the forum. We had intended to put a few items in this section by now, but have been a little busy with work and issues with my own bike.

That said, if there's anything you need to know just ask and one of us will respond - I promise

In the meantime, here's one: When trying to get a spark plug out of a CBR400 and you haven't got a long enough socket to extract the plug once it's fully unscrewed (this happened to me), get a screwdriver and wrap some insulation tape around the end a couple of times. When you have enough tape to swell the initial head size, twist the tape around on itself so that the sticky part is now facing outwards. Twist around several more times and you now have a kind of spark plug extractor tool. Although you'll only ever attempt to take the plug out once without the correct sized socket, this will get you out of a bind

Re: Servicing Tips For The CBR400

I have another one.. useful considering the amount of room you have when trying to take the plugs out of a CBR400 engine.. use a length of rubber hose which fits over the tip of the spark plug, push it onto the end of the plug and it lifts out easily.. the other advantage of using this is that you can use it to pop the plugs back in and start screwing them back in.. less likelihood of crossthreading them.. when the rubber slips use the correct sized spark plug socket..

This is of course a much better idea, except that when the plug's out the bike can't go anywhere and I didn't have any tubing

I now have the correct length of rubber tubing in the tool chest for the next time I have to change the plugs.. saves me having to hunt out another piece

After that, I went out and bought the right tools. Good job, too. I've had to take them out a lot since.
