Carb?

Restoring my 1988 NC23, fell out with it a few years ago when it decided to flake off off some panels like loose skin... Anyway heres the problem, it revs fine except when you give it the beans (northern term). When you give it a fist full it splutters, looses loads of revs, then zings to max revs. Not sure how to explan it better.

Ive had the cover off the carb but to be honest it frightens me to take it to bit. Ive blasted it with the carb cleaner but no joy.

Load of hope and fingers crossed

Rod

Re: Carb?

id like to see that bike im a fan of the 80s sport bikes. post up some pics. sounds like a electrical problem to me if it ran okay previously and has not sat for too long it could be your coil or even dirty plugs fouling things up. pull the plug and see how they look. ive had the wires go bad on one cilinder and had simmilar effect. it just gets worse untill you fine the bad plug wire or coil causing the ignition problem. i would not doubt the carbs be gummed up if it has not been started in over a year though.

Re: Carb?

Rod. It may be a balancing issue (if not electrical). It may also be running extremely rich, but I doubt that.
Check the plugs
Check the coils
Check the battery charge (even though she starts she may no be getting enough electrical juice)
Check the Throttle position switch is plugged in correctly and giving you the correct values
Good luck with it

Re: Carb?

Back again - just to let you know that the problem appears to have gone. I had a small hole in the exhaust which seemed to have been upsetting it. Welded the exhaust problem gone.

Thanks for the help

That's odd, but I'm pleased you're up and running again

Re: Carb?

I thought exactly the same - it may have just needed a blast, I dunno but Im not complaining!

All that I will say is that the hole really was making a difference to the way that it ran. such a huge improvement when the hole went!

Cheers for the help
