| NC23 Fuel Tap ('petcock') leaking Hi I am trying to tidy up a bike I got 3 months ago, CBR400RRJ NC23 1988 - luckily nothing serious so far, however -
The petrol tap leaked, and couldn't get a s/h or new replacement, so drilled the heads off the two rivets on the face plate and tapped them for 8.BA bolts, so managed to get it back together
Part numbers involved were:
Tap assembly 16950-KY2-701 (Not available, 'discontinued' by Honda)
Tank Rubber buffers 17516-MJ6-000 (David Silver Spares)
O ring, Tank to Tap 16958-KM9-005 (BAT Motorcycles)
Inside the tap itself, the flat rubber washer with 4 holes looked a bit rough on the working surface in a couple of places (and has moulded shoulders around each hole so I guessed a plain replacement might not work) so all I could do was reverse it. I thought about replacing the 'X' or 'H'-shaped ring around the operating disc but it looked ok and I thought a plain 'O' ring would not be as good. The result was only a slight improvement so I am still looking for a solution
Secondhand petrol taps seem hard to get and have not been able to find a new replacement. This must be a common problem so I wonder what everone else does - Is there a known source of rubber discs or 'x' rings or a repair kit? or old stock taps? or could anyone offer a secondhand tap? or is there another tap which would fit the tank? Any help would be appreciated! |

You might want to try one of those free 'bike breaker' searches on the internet.. also try Insane Moto who are on ebay, I've had a few bits from them for my NC29 and they have been brilliant, and reasonably priced..

| Re: NC23 Fuel Tap ('petcock') leaking LoopyLee thanks, will keep an eye out on e-bay and internet, no luck so far. Haynes manual covers NC29 and NC23, and the illustrations of NC29 tank/tap on P.4.2 and 4.3 look the same as mine - if the only difference is to do with the plastic extender piece I could probably use the original. do you happen to know if NC29 (or aero) taps are basically the same as NC23? |

| Re: NC23 Fuel Tap ('petcock') leaking Find something being sold by Insane Moto on ebay and email them.. they have loads of other stuff they dont list so they may have it in stock anyway.. thats how I got my fuel pump from them.. had had other things, was VERY satisfied with the service and emailed them straight away and they had both fuel pump and relay in stock (wasn't sure which I needed so got both) and they held on to them for a week for me until I got paid as well.. plus I paid £35 for the both of them including postage.. Blinkin brilliant firm..
I dont know if they are the same taps, will do a bit of hunting round and see if I can find out for you though..

| Re: NC23 Fuel Tap ('petcock') leaking Thanks for the recommendation - I have added Insane Moto to my collection for NC23 bits - there is likely to be more until I get used to it and get things sorted. I am fairly ancient so had a lot of different bikes, and the CBR is still a revelation, comfortable too! |

| Re: NC23 Fuel Tap ('petcock') leaking Loopy this is how your suggestions paid off
Insane Moto did not reply to my enquiry about taps and whether NC29 one would fit, but I found an eBay NC29 Gullarm tap at Magnumhull ('s59' in description but this seems unlikely to be the part number) through a 'bike breaker' websearch (it was not shown on eBay search). The photo looked similar to the NC29 Triarm tap, so bought it
Arrived this morning and the only differences were 4mm shorter plastic screw-on extender for operating switch, easily swapped with original, and 9 mm longer brass fuel collector tube into tank, easily shortened. Found the new 'O' ring had been nipped into the tank orifice in one place. The plastic filter tube od is less than the id of the o ring, so positioned the ring over the near end of the filter which is slightly wider. I hoped this centred the ring better while fitting
No more pong of petrol or (so much) risk of catching fire!
Thanks for the help and welcome, I'll be back |
