Cooling fan Seized! Does the Rad need to come off, to take off the fan?

Hiya All,

NC29, CBR400rrn.

Cooling fan Seized! Does the Rad need to come off, to take off the fan?

I've tried dousing in wd40, and leaving overnight - to no avail! either a Stone chip is stuck in there well and good, or the FAN is completly bageled! The fan can move a little either way. It dosesn't rotate at all.

Haynes Manual says the RAD needs to be removed, to get to the FAN.

Also, Taking off the Rad - does it route past the exhaust headers ok, or do they need to come off as well?!?!?

Hope you can advise!
Cheers
Martin

PS:
How did I find out? Was stuck in heavy traffic, and notied the temp guage itting the red zone!

You might be able to get away with taking the bottom bolts out and loosening the top ones. However, this depends on how seized the fan bolts are.
Either way, taking the radiator out isn't that much of a pain and will get past the head without drama. Down on the left side of the bike near the gear peg is the drain screw (check your manual to locate the exact screw). Undo this screw all the way (make sure you've got a drain tray to catch all the fluid). Once done, take off the bottom side fairings (both sides makes life easier), then remove the pipes from the radiator. After that, you've only got the top and bottom bolts hold the radiator in. Just remember to handle with care as it's really easy to damage it. Same goes for when you're removing the fan from the radiator.

Oh, and don't forget to unplug the fan first

Good luck
