| Newbie to bikes - considering a CBR400 Hi all,
I've just signed up after finding this forum through Google. I don't yet ride a bike but I'm considering learning and buying a 1987 CBR400 Aero NC23 off my Dad. Basically it has been sat in his garage for about 5 years since he had a small fall on it and has only been half repaired, now he's trying to sell it so I'm thinking of taking it off his hands as a little project. I've always said I would like to learn to ride (I'm 26) and I think this is the perfect excuse
The bike hasn't run for the last 2 years or so, my Dad reckons the starter is burnt out so this would be the first thing that needs replacing along with a new battery. Also the last time it was run it leaked fuel, probably down to a stuck float. It also needs new body fairings and seat panels which I can't seem to find anywhere on the internet (a few of the lugs on the current seat panels are broken).
So really I'm just deciding whether or not it will be worth taking it all on or whether it is going to be too much hassle and too expensive. Other than the problems mentioned above though it should be fine, there are a few scuffs and scrapes but nothing major. The bike was MOT'd after he did some repairs, including new forks and front discs, so it shouldn't take too much to make it road worthy again.
Does anyone know where I might be able to get the missing fairings from?
Also what is the going price for these bikes in good knick?
Any help / advice would be great.
P.S. Here are a few pics to show the condition of the bike. |

| Re: Newbie to bikes - considering a CBR400 Hi Skynet
Good luck with this if you decide to buy it from your dad.. There are a few replacement seat fairing panels on ebay at the moment for £25 each.. as for any other panels you may need they also pop up on ebay from time to time as well..
You may want to try emailing these guys Skidmarx UK Ltd - Motorcycle Road & Track Bodywork, Screens, Huggers, Fairings, Belly Pans, Mudguards, Undertrays, Accessories. They show panels for the NC23 on their parts list but I'm not sure if that also includes the Aero model. The panels aren't cheap but in all honesty considering the age of our bikes and the fact that good second hand panels are like rocking horse poop, Skidmarx may be your best bet.
If the existing panels on the bike aren't in too bad a condition you may be able to find a good plastic welder locally who could sort them out for you. Try asking at a couple of local bike shops as they may know someone they can recommend..
For the starter you may want to check out these guys on ebay.. eBay UK Shop - Insane Moto Spares: Mail Order Motorcycle Spares, Quality parts, Fast Service they don't have much listed on there at the moment but send them an email and they may be able to help you.. They sometimes take a day or 2 to reply, so don't panic if you don't hear straight back from them. I'd definately recommend them as I've had parts for my bike from them and found the prices and service were really good..
As for learning to ride.. I'd always said I wanted to as well and I learned a couple of years ago at 40

| Re: Newbie to bikes - considering a CBR400 Well I've just bought a starter motor from eBay for £10 and I don't even own the bike yet...
Yeah I saw the seat panels on eBay and will probably send an offer to the seller if I do decide to go ahead with the project.
Thanks for the Skidmarx link, I may enquire about the other panels then. I think you're right about them being my best bet, like you say finding decent second hand panels is going to be difficult seeing as most of the parts on eBay are from bikes being broken for spares which means they've probably been in an accident and the panels will be the first things to get fubared!
The seat panels probably could be repaired by a plastic welder, they only have a few lugs broken off so that might be worth enquiring about, thanks for the advice! |

| Re: Newbie to bikes - considering a CBR400 A little update...
I have handed over the money to my dad so the bike is officially mine now
I have also bought the two seat panels that were on eBay, so just need the other side fairings now. However... I tried the new starter motor on it to no avail. I tested the old starter on the bench with the battery and it was fine so the starter was a red herring! I'm now tracing the non-starting problem out. First place I'm going to look is at the solenoid.
If anyone has a wiring diagram for an NC23 Aero or anything else with a similar electrical system it would be great if they could share it
I think I might start a progress thread just to make it easier to follow my project |

I think I might start a progress thread just to make it easier to follow my project | Good luck with tracing the problem.. I've scanned the page from my manual for you, I've left it as the scanned size (big) so it's easier to pick detail out..
I would recommend you buy a manual of your own though. You can pick them up pretty cheap on Ebay, I think I paid a fiver for mine..
And yes a progress thread is a good idea as it may help others who come to the site looking for similar information

| Re: Newbie to bikes - considering a CBR400 Brilliant, thanks for that LoopyLee!
It looks like the diode is kaputt on the starter circuit anyway... the starter relay and motor both worked independently on the battery so I checked the diode and it doesn't measure right on my multimeter, it is open circuit in both directions. Now I just have to hunt around the net to find one... |
