Service for my bike and i need opinions

hey guys so im servicing my bike this week or the coming week and i currently have an 1988 NC23J cbr 400 tri arm and i need some tips

spark plugs NGK iridium or NGK normal ones?

Engine Oil which brand and what type apart from 4 cylinder oil of course 5w50? and ii make sure its hi performance?

should i change the chain? and clutch?

and it seems that the previous owner bought a viper exhaust can for it but it wasnt originally for the NC23 and he changed the attachment by welding so the can hangs a bit loose. should i wait a bit more then change the downpipes? or just do it now? and get a new can too?

thanks

spark plugs NGK iridium or NGK normal ones? iridium... they last longer and are more efficient IMO

Engine Oil which brand and what type apart from 4 cylinder oil of course 5w50? and ii make sure its hi performance? i use castrol normally, but dont have a preference as long ass its semi synthetic

should i change the chain? and clutch? only if they are needed! remember, if you do the chain, you should do the sprockets too. are there any tight spots on the chain or worn teeth on the sprockets?

thanks

heya! see notes in red!

hey thanks

ye about the exhaust i'll do it after i fix my current problem which is currently the bike is stalling after a while on idle and sometimes i here clunking when its on idle from the engine or something, maybe carb timings or springs, not sure or a dirty fuel system? yesterday i raised it a bit and saw black puffs so theres dirt probably involved.

Hi mate, my bike used to stall/cut out on idle when I had the lights on, brought a new battery and it seems to have resolved the issue. Not sure if this has something to do with yours stalling though

Personally I wouldn't bother with the expensive plugs because unless you do track sessions you won't really notice the difference.

With regard to the oil a 5w40 or, as the book says, a 10w40 is the way to go. Mobile (yes car oil) do a nice semi-synthetic that's reasonably priced and does a good job. I've been using it for three years without issue but I also change it fairly regularly with a filter each time.

Unless the chain has been allowed to get rusty and has worn out its links, just take it off the back cog and drop it into a tray of kerosine or WD40. Wash it throughly and remember to move the links through their full movement back and forth to free off the grit that gets between them. Don't forget to wash down the cogs, too. When you've rotated through the whole chain, wipe it down with a cloth, relocate and either lube the chain with chain wax (far too messy for me) or fresh WD40.

DO NOT USE WD40 for lube.. it will dry out the o/x rings and cause premature wear on your chain. i use wd40 to clean my chain.. find a good spray lube. i use maxxis chain wax. but any of them work pretty well

Well, I used it for years on my 400, which I used nearly every day, as have quite a few others I know, without any issues at all. The only thing I would add is make sure you check the chain regularly and give it a spray once every week or two.
