Re: what Fuel do you use ?

Fuel looks like it's a lot more complcated in other parts of the world than over here!

We basically get normal unleaded, Super unleaded or diesel! Octane rating is not something we ever really mention here in the UK....

It's probably the same as here but it's more sensible to refer to them as 91, 95 and 98RON. Super here refers to the now extinct leaded fuel.
91RON is Unleaded, 95RON is Premium Unleaded and 98RON is sold under a variety of brand names like Vortex or Ultimate.
Of course our RON rating is different to the US MON rating - is it only the US that uses MON?

It certainly won't hurt the bike to try a tankful. If you hear the motor "pinking" then go up to 95 or 98. Personally I don't think you're going to have a problem at all.

According to Loopy, the 400 has 11.3:1 compression. Unless you've raised the compression significantly you'll be fine on standard fuel.

My bike was an NC29 and it hated 91 (used to pink all the time) until wider jets were put in. No idea why though.

I make that 17kpl?
Is that normal mileage for a CBR400?
My ZX6R gets better than that around town.
My _cars_ get 13-14kpl.

Because it was lean I would guess :-)
Lean means hot and hot promotes detonation.

It gets around 20kpl around town. '98 model.
The 929 and my '98 GSXR750 both get around 14kpl around town.
The 929 _almost_ hit 30kpl on an interstate trip when I was getting low on fuel and trying not to get stuck in the desert :-)

Sorry, that bit I had guessed. I didn't understand why the bike had an issue with 91 given that it's supposed to be okay on it.

There could be many reasons. Carbon build-up in the combustion chamber can raise the static compression ratio. Trying to make the bike pull throttle too low in the rev range can cause pinging.
Opening up the intake or exhaust could be enough to push it into detonation.
The reason for yours seems to be that it was lean. Why it was lean I can't guess though.

fuel consumption
Looks like you're getting fairly normal mileage out of yours or even a little better. How far do you get on the lower octane fuels?

oh could you work that out into mpg for us UK riders please

1mile=0.625 kms

this is how i work out my mpg

first i take the mileages i got in this cace it was 213km then divided it by 1.6 to get the miles which is 133.125 then divided that by the litres 12.6 = 10.5654762 multiply by 4.54 the size of a gallon in the uk =47.9672619 which is the mpg i got out of my bike

i don't use low octane fuel in the cbr

if the fuel price keeps going up like it is at the moment i may give them a go

but for now i'm going to stick with the high octane stuff

i'm trying BP ULTIMATE now to see if that give me any difference

i'll keep you posted on how i got one with it

Since you measure your range in kilometers and the tank in litres why convert it to mpg?
Since mpg is diferent in the UK and US (I don't think anybody else still uses miles or gallons?) it doesn't make sense to me to use it.
I used to simply multiply kpl by 2.7 to get UK mpg but I don't know how accurate it is.

I thought you meant you were pleased to get the good fuel economy because of the high-octane fuel :-)
Try the low octane stuff to see if there's a difference.
I run 98 because it gives me greater tank range in all my bikes and cars. The car I built in '07 I took 1mm off the head so it pings badly on regular unleaded. I took 0.55mm off my '98 GSXR750 but that still runs fine on 91RON.

i was useing Shell V-Power

now i'm giving BP ULTIMATE a go

i may give the lower octane fuel a go soon seeing as it's about 5/10p cheaper a litre then the high octane stuff

A local supermarket chain (Sainsburys) used to stock LRP (Lead Replacement Petrol) which is near enough the same as the leaded fuel.

Since then, they have stopped selling it so I'm back to using unleaded with lead replacement addictive

All of my classics used to run on leaded fuel (well until they stopped selling it ).

I've been told (on many occasions) that the valves in them days weren't hardened, and neither was the sleves. Running at high revs with unleaded you can burn them (well if they are going to go they are going to go... Might as well get the head off when it happens)

I've heard the same but I don't think I've actually seen the results of running a "leaded" engine on unleaded as leaded fuel was well before my time :-)

so here's what i've been getting

BP ultimate unleaded 97ron = 47 mpg

bp 95ron unleaded = 45.4 mpg

Tesco's 95ron unleaded = 54.6 mpg

Sainsburys 95ron unleaded = 57.9 mpg
