45-58mpg is a hell of a variance - is it all during similar riding and weather?

Certainly is an interesting spread.
Does the bike feel any different on the different fuels?
We almost always buy from two BP's near us and occasionally a Shell station so our fuel doesn't vary much in quaility or mix.
The last tank of 98 I bought was last week at A$1.51 per litre (US$1.24) but it hasn't normally been that high recently.

wall on the regular bp it fill slower and the bike seams to miss fires on it

i don't like bp fuel anyway as i've always got Sh*t mpg from it

i do like Shell thought and the bike dose run very wall on it and i think the acceleration is better on the V-power

but there's not that mean shell fuel stations around so i just started fuel when i need it at what every garages thats closest to me
Tesco's sale some 99 octane fuel so i'm going to give that a go soon

I have always kept track of my mileage as it's a good indicator of potential engine problems.

Yeah, with a bike you would pretty much have to deliberately try to avoid knowing what your mileage is :-)

Couldnt give a monkies tbh, I have a general idea how much I get to the tank (130 to tank riding dependant) thats good enough for me. CHecking for .5 .3 .4 absolutely baffles me. I have a 1ltr bike that goes from 50mpg to 7ishmpg depending on my wrist, also theres a little gadget on the dial that tells me how much Im using and how much is left before I need to fill up again.

surprisingly low....I usually got min 280km on the 98RON from Exxon Mobil before I have to turn reserve...I think mayb because our speed limits are at max 90km/hr...

Anywayz I just changed from RON 95 to 98 1 tank and Im not sure whether it is the cause of my irregular idling...haha... sometimes I start the bike in the morning and even after maintaing throttle for 5 min it will die of...rpm was set at 1.2 -1.3 when warm...

Every little helps

* Detonation (Pinking)

Pinking usually occurs when ignition timing is over advanced or when the octane number of the fuel is inadequate for the engine. The octane requirement of the engine will increase over time due to carbon and deposit buildup in the combustion chamber. The octane requirement normally varies cyclically as the combustion chamber deposits build up and then flake off. This is why many cars stop pinking after a high speed/high load run.
Hi Twin,

is pinking like the sound of a gunshot or backfire they call it that comes out of the exhausts?? if you can elaborate more, it would be great...

I used to run regular in my 03' 954 ..... I later made several mods and had the bike dyno tuned on high test 93. Since then if I run anything other then high test it pings and runs rough.

No, that's backfiring.
Pinking is a rattly sound like pebbles in an aluminium can.
Often evident when you try to accelerate hard from very low RPM in too high a gear.

95ron in mine, although if i use 98ron it 'pinks' or 'pings' as some say. Mileage wise, light comes on...put fuel in. If I ride it like an old lady I get 190kms otherwise, well lets just say its a LOT less

Nope, that noise is hydraulic lifters pumped dry.

I couldn't see any videos there of actual pinking.
These guys have a recording through their software but I'm not sure the pinking is obvious to an ear that doesn't know what it's listening for.

One of my cars pinks on low-octane fuel but we just filled it with 98 and it won't do it on 98 at all. I tried just now to make it happen with no luck.
If you get an aluminium Coke can and drop some small pebbles in and shake it around that's the sound you're listening for, but many people don't hear it over the normal engine noise even when it's really bad.

Sorry I can't help on the size of tank for the NC23. I've never owned one.
95 Benzene wherever I can get it in Thailand...
95 Gasohol if I can't avoid it.

Pretty good description if you ask me.

Except I really wouldn't use gasohol on a 400 CBR. Not no way, no how. It wrecks the carb rubbers, fuel pumps and hoses. When I couldn't get 95 benzene I used 91 benzene. The '04 Kawasaki is a different ball game but even then it would only be a last resort and I wouldn't leave it in there.
