Does it do it everytime, only when its cold, only at xyz rpm when shifting up/down?

| Re: help bike keeps jumping out of gear I really dont think it could be the fuel.
I'd say you have a few miles on it, and this is some what "normal" in a sence for the early cbr's with high miles.
I'd open the gear box and take a look inside, look for bits and shavings.
Jumping out of gear for no reason is a bad sign. |

| Re: help bike keeps jumping out of gear I'd check the gear box first if it's only 2nd gear.
I dont have that bike so I cant give you step by step on yours.
I'd get the manual and go from there if you have never done anything like this.
Also if you plan to keep the bike you will need the manual again. |

It could mean worn internals... (gearbox)

Pop it open and look you see bit of metal, shavings or broke parts if it's that bad? |

Make sure you know where everything goes, (unless you have a haynes manual), either take pictures or make diagrams.

Try to take Friday off, start on a Thursday night, that way if you have to get a part you have more days to work with.
Or go to a junk yard and get a whole gear box. (if your turns out to be shot) |

Not sure if you'll need it but at £20.00 including P&P it sounds reasonable.

also some one siad it could be the clutch plates ?? | I believe the engine has to come out of the bike to get into the 'box. First of all (and to save a lot of time, effort and money, do an oil change and look to see if there are any visible signs of metal. The engine/'box share the same oil, so if you chip a tooth or a fork that metal could be floating around the block.
If you can't see anything unusual in the oil, fill the bike back up with a cheapo oil and see if the change is any better. Mine used to be a clunky change when it was time for new oil. Afterwards she was slick. I had a lot more kilo's on my bike than you have on yours and I would often get too lazy to pull the clutch in.
My personal opinion is that the selector fork is bent. A lot of work to get to but quite easy to fix once you're there. If not that, then the shift drum. Either way there's a fair bit of work to get to the problem if this is more than just a neglected oil change. Quote:

And I wouldn't recommend using it other than for the test ride with new oil. If there is bits of metal floating around in there you'll do more damage, which will cost more money and take the bike off the road for longer. Quote:

Btw, a good rider on your 400 will beat your mate and his bike through the twisties |

| Re: help bike keeps jumping out of gear if the gearbox is as jumpy and stiff as you say i doubt a oil change is going to sort the problem. you really need to look at it though cos if the parts are wearing broken or breaking and small filings are coming off. it only takes a few oilways to get blocked and you have **** it to be honest, then it becomes how to rebuild an engine rather than a clunky gearbox. a friend of mine had a gpz kawasaki and melted the clutch basket. after a full engine rebuild he ended up flogging it and getting a new 1. so it really needs opening up. i dont think its to difficult if your not to bad with a spanner. i cant emphasise the need for a haynes manual. you cant go wrong.
good luck |
