CBR400 NC23 Charging problem

Hi i have an ongoing problem with nc23.

Runs sweet but when using headlamps battry flattens and bike stops.
have replaced battery. replaced reg with aftermarket one, reg burnt out and melted all over swing arm in 10 mins. replaced reg with yamaha 1 with decent
heatsink and stopped using headlamps lasted better but still wont support
headlamps. this now to has melted.

have checked output across batt 14.5v 3000 rpm but drops away slowly
when headlamps on.
have checked and removed stator 50v ac across all 3 phases @ 4000 rpm. 0.5 ohms across all phases and looks sweet no burning etc.

anyone got any ideas?? can stator brakedown only when hot ???

Short with the headlamp? Is it just the headlamp thats causing it to die? Would check the wiring first (just having a stab).

This is the first thing I'd try also, check the wiring. Particularly if the bike has had several previous owners who have had their way with the loom.

Trace the headlamp wiring as far as you can and ensure there are no shorts. Then examine the headlamps themselves, check them with your multimeter whilst they're on.

Re: CBR400 NC23 Charging problem

I believe you should replace the main power feed wire from the reg/rectifier to the battery (it's the thickest wire of the bunch in that area). This wire more than likely looks fine but ends up causing trouble, especially when you're on the move and especially since you've already experienced a burn out of you reg/rec.

Also check the head light bulb sizes being used. You probably have too high a wattage bulb in place. If this is so, the stator can be in perfect condition but unable to supply sufficient power to run them and top up the charge for the battery. The NC29s were a later spec but still suffered in the same way, so it's pretty certain this is where you problems are.

Good luck and don't forget to update us on progress or the solution, as this will help others.

Re: CBR400 NC23 Charging problem

Thanks for replies guys

have since chopped up loom & replaced wiring from stator to reg.
replaced reg with a yamaha 6 wire one, replaced wiring from reg
to earth, reg to battery (with much larger wire) and run the reg
sensor wire to positive of rear brake light switch just because it
was the closest + ign feed.

i also cut vents in rear fairing to allow some air flow over cooling fins.

and PROBLEM SOLVED . Well at least so far.

thanks again for replies.
