Gunk's new project

As some of you know I've just acquired a very cheap 1995 CBR600F, Its only had a couple of owners, 28,000 miles 3,000 of which have been done in the last 10 years.

The last service a couple of years ago was over £650 and this included two new Bridgestone tyres. My plan is to just tidy it up within a very tight budget and use it for bit and then decide if to keep it and restore it further or sell it on.

This is how it arrived

The plastics were pretty tatty, worst damage was to the right hand side

I got lucky on Ebay and found a clean infill panel, plus managed to scrounge some vinyl to repair the damaged decals

...and the results are not bad.

Next job is to repaint the replacement seat infill panel I've bought, (it's just a shade out)

But so far It's looking pretty good.

What is interesting is when you compare it to a similar age Fireblade. The Blade is completely stripped back, there's nothing on the bike that isn't needed.

That's some work Gunk! Well done on the decal work. Probably not something I would try.

I'm not 100% happy with it as the vinyl shows every imperfection, so I'm going to remove it and prepare the surface much more thoroughly and have another go.

I wasn't happy with the replacement decal, so I pulled it off and prepped the area much more thoroughly

I cut out a fresh decal

And really pleased with the results

Also started repainting the tail fairing

Another couple of hours pleasant graft this afternoon, lots of tea and the radio blasting oldies out of the garage!

An hour of flatting back with wet and dry

Painted the tatty grab rail

New rubber band for the rear can

There's not much to do now, just top coat the seat fairing panel, give it a once over and MOT it. I looked back at the bike after I'd finished and thought it really looked good, especially compared with the state it was in when I bought it.

Re: Gunk's new project

Finished the tail section last night, flattened it back with 2500 grit wet and dry with plenty of water and then cut it back using cutting polish.

So that's about all the cosmetic work completed, I need to just go right over check everything and then get it on the road.

That's it, all done, I'm doing anything else to it as I like the fact it's a little bit scruffy and I can just use it as a hack without worrying about it. It all came in at under £700 on the road, you can't buy a non runner for that, happy days!

Just, saying some people here would have polished that can to a mirror finish and touch up the black rim with black touch up paint on those paint... But beside that, looks great...

I quite like the fact it's a bit used, also I'd like to get it on the road and use it for a couple of months.

If I decide to keep it I'll then tear it down and do a similar job that I did on my Blade. But for now it'll do!
