1300 VTX needs help

Hello, first let me say this is my first post to the site, but have enjoyed reading the post made by others. Now, can someone answer my problem? I enstalled a national cycle light bar on my 1300vtx, and wired it according to the instuctions, and used the power supply for the spot lights from the low beam power source to the headlight. After completing all this, I now have no neutral light, no temperature light, and the bike will not even try to start. I disconnected all the wirring that I had connected and still have no neutral light, or temperature light, and the bike does not make even a click when I press the start button. The tail light, headlight, horn and other stuff works but that's it. The battery seemed to be charged, but I now have it out and hooked to a charger just in case. If the headlight and horn seem strong, could the battery be weak enough that the nuetral light will not come on or the bike even try to start? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you blew a fuse. There should be some info in the owners book regarding what fuse controls those items.

on the fuse. Did you disconnect the battery before wiring the light bar?

I have checked the main 30 amp fuse and also the sub fuses in the fuse panel which holds six fuses and a diode and they all check ok.

I did not disconnect the battery before wirring the light bar, I did however take the battery out after all this happened and charged it to make sure that a weak batttery was not my problem. Do you know of any other fuses hidden somewhere on the bike other than the 30 amp main and the six sub fuses in the fuse panel? Man! I am lost!

I am in Kingsport which is located in the extreme North East of Tennessee. I did attempt to check the kill switch and as best as I can tell it is ok. When the kill switch died on you did it affect your neutral light from comming on? And, no, it is not a dumb question when directed to me especiallly. I always look for more complicated reasons and overlook the simple ones, which is what I hope is my problem is now.

I don't think he means his kill switch died, rather he meant that it was turned off and he wasn't aware of it when he tried to start the bike. Common situation really . . .

There may be an inline fuse on your bike somewhere. Do you have a wiring diagram? That would help you trace the common element for the items that aren't working on the bike. Also, is there a tipover switch on the VTX? I would bet there is a clutch switch and kickstand switch as well. These can be designed to kill the engine circuits which may share common wiring with other components.

you are right again Mr. abtech!
Good idea on the tip over switch, and the rest.
I would look over anything that you touched during your modification.
Seems like any time you make a modification "something" happens!

Re: 1300 VTX needs help

Well, I think I found my problem, or at least it will run now and I have the nuetral light. I finished installing the light bar, and a drive shaft cover, hywaybars, fats windshield and lowers, and topped it all off with the front fender trim that looks like a grill or bumper. Then to celebrate just got bac from a three and one half hour ride with my friends. Man, those lowers sure knock off a lot of wind! Well worth the money in cold weather. Thanks to all who replied and hopefully I will be able to help someone else some time. Thanks again and safe riding.

After checking each switch and relay I found a loose connection in the neutral switch wire where it connects in the wiring harness under the drivers seat. I was so releived and happy over getting it fixed and going for a ride that I forgot to mention what I had found. Glad the bike is better, now maybe I can get a nights sleep without going over possible causes in my mind for half the night. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: 1300 VTX needs help

pappayak, If I had been just installing the light bar on the stock bike it would have been a snap. I had the windshield, and the lowers that I had to try to work around. Mainly the lowers. The simple thing to do was to re-position the lowers so the light bar would not come in contact with them. My problem was that i couldnot re-position the lowers because they would come in contact with the engine guard (crash bars). The only solution that I could find was to install a headlight extension bracket which moved the headlight, and the light bar forward, thus making everything fit the bike. I will say that the way the signal lights are mounted on the light bar, that it is a poor design as to trying to get to the screws to replace a signal light bulb. Another thing, after about two days the signal light bulb in one side blew! I came with a 35w bulb and I could not find it at any automotive parts place or almost no motorcyle dealer. They all have the bulb in 50w, but I did not want that load on my wiring. I finally found the bulb at a Harley dealer. About a week later the other bulb blew! So naturally I replaced it. The replacement bulbs have been installed since that time, and I have put around 12,000 miles on the bike and they are still good shape. My conclusion is that the bulbs that come in the light bars must be of very bad quality.
