VTX1300 RS Rear Tire Change

The standard rear tire of my '03 VTX1300 RS is a 170/80-15. I would like to put a wider tire on, for greater handling and stability, but the local dealer said it can't/shouldn't be done. They also said it shouldn't be done on an 1800 but I know of several that have done so. Does anyone have any experience with this?
