Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

Hello,

Have not had a Honda since the early 70s when I started with a CB450, have been riding BMW "R" bikes exculsively.

My wife saw a deal on her company bulletin board for 1 2001 Honda 750 Shadow (VT750-CD), 9000 miles, with intercom/radio of some kind, windshield, jack, luggage/bag to go over backrest, leather looking saddlebags, pair of HJC helmets "wired for sound", trailer, and some other extras, for an asking price of $4100.

Have not negotiated the price yet but unless the trailer is really kick-ass I think it's a bit high. But, the main reason for posting is to see what the general feeling is about this family. Reliability, fuel mileage, parts support, all-day freeway blasting, etc.

Any relevant comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Justin B.

The 750 is a bit under powered but ok for cruising.

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

A 750 Shadow is a great bike... Price seems alittle high but it would be nice to have a trailer.. To be honest I couldn't tell alot of difference between my 2001 VT750 and my 2006 VTX1300.. Matter of fact the VT750 was alittle quicker.. Since the VTX1300 had shaft drive it seemed alot heaver, the VTX had more torque but as far as putting the torque down on the road it felt heavy. The VT 750 was lighter and quicker...

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

Thanks for the replies. I see this bike's primary role as a summer commuter. I work out in the "sticks" and have a 32 mile (each way) commute where 90%, or better, will be at 70-75 mph. I have read that this family likes to "cruise" along in the 50-60 mph range and don't know if running it at 70+ all of the time will stress it, cause reliability issues, cause fuel consumption issues, etc.

Right now I ride the 1000cc BMW twins which will run at these speeds all day and get about 45 mpg. With crude topping the $90/barrel I can forsee $4/gallon gas in our future...

VT 750 ACE will cruise 80mph easily all day and night.. No doubt about it.. I put 30,000 miles on mine, never missed a lick.. it was a 2001 red and black..

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

What kind of gas mileage were you getting at those speeds? Also, what are the valve adjustment and oil change intervals? I have read a couple of complaints about valve adjustment difficulty, but the complainers did not elaborate. I will admit that I'm a little spoiled in the "ease of maintenance" department on the old Beemers, everything routine is fairly easy to accomplish.

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

Thanks for the specs. I'm surprised to find it carbed, I figured anything that late would be injected. I think BMWs last year for carbs (in US) was '95...

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

The bikes torque is 40-50 range.. You wouldn't be disappointed... It was a great bike.. so much so that when I got my 2006 VTX 1300 I was really disappointed... So I sold it... some more numbers on it..
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION
Charging output: 300 watts Battery: 12v, 28 AH
Instruments: Speedometer, LCD odometer/tripmeter; warning lights for high beam, turn signals, neutral, oil pressure and low fuel
PERFORMANCE
Fuel mileage: 36 to 41 mpg, 38.9 mpg avg.
Average range: 133 miles
Rpm at 60 mph, top-gear: 3400
200 yard, top-gear acceleration from 50 mph, terminal speed: 69.97 mph
Quarter-mile acceleration: 12.28 sec., 83.9 mph

I have to dispute that range, I could get 200 miles on one tank..

My dad just bought that same bike, but a 99. Seems pretty nice, he got it for 3,000. Since then he has added sissy bar, windshield, and a cruise control thing. I have rode it a little, it is a decent bike i think for a cruiser.

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

I have a 2004 shadow VLX 600 delux and honestly the deal with the trailer sound great...the bike is at least 3500...and with a trailer that is just plain awsome.

I got my bike for 3300 and then i added a windshield for 145, saddle bags for 90 off ebay...by the way always make sure you ask the ebay sellers about the leather...i got junkies for the 90 (they are patched leather that do not hold their shape)...and Im good to go...

It belongs to somebody where the wife works. The intercom/radio is a J&M unit. I seem to remember they are somewhat expensive and also has two HJC 3/4 helmets that are wired with earpieces and boom mics.

Re: Thinking of buying - 2001 750 Shadow A.C.E.

As far as gas mileage goes my '07 VT750C2 is getting 54.3 - 54.7 consistantly. Mine's in the shop for it's 600 mile check up that includes a valve adjustment. I don't have the manual with me but I beleive there is a fairly long interval before they have to be adjusted again. Good luck with your decision!
