New rebel rider looking for advice

Hey all

I just started riding after I completed my MSF course back in March '08. Currently riding a rebel (was heavily advised it was a good bike for riders with NO experience) and loving it, but I just hit my 1k mark on it.

Does anyone know if 3k is the "magic" number for street-only oil changes? Also can anyone give me a good idea on when it might be time to get my bike checked over for stuff like brakes, hose wear, etc etc? I tried to look around the I-net for a good repair-it-yourself type manual but I can't seem to find anything for my bike. I'd love to actually be able to grease it up myself, but I dont have the time to beg a shop to let me learn.

Ty for ur time.

there are plenty of repair manuals out there, clymer is a good one if you can find it .. (amazon) you can change your oil yourself whenever your ready to. there's really nothing to it.. and no need to wait until a certain mileage as long as you are routinely checking all the little things, nuts, bolts and what not, make sure to keep an eye out for stuff like that, they will vibrate loose. you'll get plenty more info, just follow the maintenance schedule out of your owners manual and you'll be good to go.

Thanks much. I went right out to amazon's website and found a manual by clymer. I hope it helps me understand my bike alot better, I dont think I would have known how to find that if you hadn't suggested, so thanks again.
