I have built a trike by removing the front fork from my '83 VT750 C and building a frame to attach the front axle beam from an old VW Beetle. Two wheels up front, one in the back with a steering wheel and seating for two. The problem is that first gear seems pretty tall...either that or I am severely lacking in low end torque for some reason. If this was a chain drive bike I would simply change to a larger rear sproket...but it isn't

I can use a low profile automotive tire and gain about 8% - but I suspect that this really isn't much. Looking for other creative suggestions.

Are 2nd gear starts an option? You've probably tried it already, but it's the easiest thing I could think of. I have virtually no knowledge of shaft drivetrains. You might want to try a list/forum that caters to Goldwings. I've seen more 'wing trikes than any other type.

maybe I didn't say what I meant.
I really need a gear lower than first. Starting in first takes a very gentle clutch feel and a lot of slipping.
