| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) depends how fast I can scrape up an extra $140.00 ($20 for excise tax, $45 for registration and $75 for insurance) roughly I am guessing on the excise tax. maybe a week or two. it would be faster if my car hadnt broke down. when the sending unit went it took the ignition controll module with it.... rotten luck.
but I am doing everything in my power, I have sold a couple parts off the suzuki, and maybe sold the frame/motor/electronics, too, if the guy comes through on saturday I may be lucky enough to get her on the road by monday. I also have a bunch of marine corals up for sale and if they go it'll be faster. Its hard telling not knowing. I may also sell off a 12inch subwoofer from my car, that'll be about 65$ if I can sell it. there are so many "IFs" right now its all up in the air at the moment. |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) thanks loopy, its still got a long way to go before its complete, but its rideable now. and its only going to get better (more twisted and evil looking) on down the road .
probably this week I'll start fabricating the new side covers, I just wish I hadnt used all my kitty hair on the metro.
have a lot of detail cleaning to do to the bike too (I dont think its ever had more than a rain bath) a lot of the anodization (on the aluminum) is corroded under and lifting, probably just going to sand it off and paint it with high temp red or flat black. I spent an hour with a dremel working on one side of the front fork today polishing all the pitting out of it.

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) Rust deamon is now Street leagle. insure registered all ready to go!!!!!!!!!!!!
long story short, bought yet another expensive part for my car, car still wont start my old lady said "put the bike on the road but your stuck riding that rain or shine for a couple weeks, we wont be able to buy any parts for the car for a couple weeks..." I returned the part to pay for the registration, the excise tax was only 12 dollars and no title needed as its over 20 years old. my insurance agancy was closed so I went through some one else but it was a 13$ more a year. no biggie, I'm leagle. YAY!!!!!!
I love my future wife. riding in the rain today. |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) what a hoot today was. riding in the rain at night not so fun but this late there were few cars out. but riding in the rain plenty of fun, get a lot of looks like "this guy is nuckin futz" yeah.
tire is seeping around the edge bead though, tommorrow morning I have to create a device to allow me to break the tire away from the rim, so I can clean the bead and the seat, friggen sat too long with flat tires so the leak is all the way aound the rim.
I tried just letting the air out and taking out the alve stem, and squeezing it with my monster channel lock pliers to get it awayfrom the edge enough to clean it up but just didnt have the leverage. no worries in daylight tommorrow when I can run my powertools I'll build a custom tire break. no way am I paying some one 40$ to just get the tire off the bead without removing it. and If I do it this way I can do one side at a time and not have to rebalance it.
need to readjust my headlight too, its a little to high so high beam is shining off into the sky......
clutch isnt fully disngaging either has a constant drag makes it hard to get into first from neutral since the transmission is always spinning going from second to first isnt a problem but from a dead stop/neutral getting into first can take like 10 taps on the shifter thats a pain (hope its not a bent shifting fork), I gotta see if I can adjust the cluitch or if I have to replace it. (probably just a simple adjustment) it also tends to keep the idle up when I clutch to upshift so my upshifting can be a bit lurchy since the idle isnt creeping down when I roll off the throttle.
eh she's an old bike still a long way to go on it.

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) riding at night is the best way to figure out a bike, you have to do everything blind so you cant cheat and look at the controlls. its memory or nothing (probably not the safest way I'm sure but I am a sink or swim kinda guy)
forgot to mention I couldnt afford the vanity plate because of the suddeness of the situation so I am stuck with a generic plate for now. fortunatly at the DMV I asked about it and all I have to do is pay the difference to upgrade when I can afford it (be as soon as I can I garauntee that) RUSTDMN will ride, oh yes it will.

as for the future wife well, this one time on a trampoline.... wait a minute thats a discussion for another forum (just kidding)
I started building my homecrafted tire break but my impact driver ran out of juice so the battery is charging, I cant seem to find my second battery (at $50 a pop I better find it or I'll be some miffed) But I brainstormed last night on how to build a collapsable tire break so I can put it out of the way when I dont need it. wait till you guys see it you'll think I'm a complete wingnut if you dont already. gotta run to the store and get dog and cat food. |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) ok here is the redneck tire break, works like a charm.
all the parts just slide together the "box" or upright frame just slides over the end of the wooden "I" joist and the lever and block are just a lever and block. so simple its ridiculous, took me a total of 5 minutes to build. (note: this only break the tire from the bead, it does not get the tire off the rim) http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4176.jpg
took the tire off the bead sanded the corrosion off the bead, tire still seeps, aint that a bummer. thats ok going to pick up some bead sealer in the morning when NH bragg opens.
]
heres my bike with no tire, been cleaning out and setting up the garage better for working on my bike. still a long way to go before the garage is perfect, but its better than it was a couple weeks ago http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4175.jpg

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) What century is the tire from? Is it going to be changed anyway? Half the problem could be the stone-hard rubber.
Note, I am not suggesting that you should have a shop install new tires. Doing it yourself is better and cheaper.

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) the tire is plenty pliable the rim itself has corrosion all over the inner edges, where the tire seals from sitting outside in the Maine winter flat. after cleaning all the corrosion off, it still wouldnt seal though it did slow down the leak considerably.
I actually found a place thats open on a sunday and had bead sealer......
problem solved, the tire has been holding air for about 2 hours now (little under) with no loss of pressure (before it would lose about 1lb a half hour) the tires are relativly newish about 2 years old just not ridden on much.
for some reason my brake light is now refusing to click on when I hit the brakes... (figures solve one problem and another crops up)
also tried bleeding the clutch to see if there was air in it maybe causing the problem shifting into first, didnt help though I think I did get a bit of air out. in any case it hase clean dot 4 in it now as opposed to the blackish cloudy mess that was in it. next is to find a manual and see if there is an adjustment for the hydraulic clutch or not.

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) OK figured out the problem with the brake light. when I switched to the suzuki brake lever it left the cotact switch in the "on" position and carbonized the contacts inside the switch. I tested the switch with my multimeter and there was an incomplete circut in the switch.
Again and I love this if you ask any parts store its "not user servicable, you need a new switch" right and wrong. thats the easy way out. I popped the case on the switch open, breaking the "soft welds" (melted plastic that holds the case together) normally this can very easily be your undoing often inside when you take apart a permanent unit like this little pieces (can) go flying and your up goose poop creek without a duck. but here is the inside of the switch http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4182.jpg
in this picture you can see the inside of the cover, if you look close you can see carbonization on the cover where the permanent on connection heated part of the unit causing carbon build up inside interfering with the circut http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4183.jpg
if you look close at this picture you can see the rivet like "soft welds" (thats what I call em) are broken, IF you crack open a unit like this be prepared for it to never ever go back together again. http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4184.jpg
after a short time cleaning up the guts of the unit making sure all contact points were clean and the cover had no carbon build up residue to creat a short, I put it back together and tested it, presto chango A working throw away part. my brake light would now work if I had the right lever on it. the solution to that was to take the broken lever and put an extension on it for now. took a grinder to a piece of aluminum and came up with a REALLY comfortable brake lever (yes it looks semi horrible) but it works and its comfortable untill I can get the kuryakin levers I want. http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/DSCN4186.jpg |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) I have made the descision that stock sucks, and I am going to customize the ever living crap out of this bike
here is a short list of some of the plans for rust deamons future, some may be right off quick and some may not happen untill this winter when i wont be held back from riding because she is torn apart.
probably next is to keep the throttle grip from slipping if I hold it really loosely the throttle recoils without the grip, thats a simple fix, I am going to peel off the throttle grip, clean the actual throttle and the inside if the grip and put a few dots of Geocell on the inside of the grip and slide it back on. I dont want to use too much incase I change the grips in the future.
I also need to figure out why when I roll off the throttle the she stays ramped up and recoils slowly she doesnt drop in Idle as fast as I roll off the throttle, I dont like that because it makes not only shifting harder, but it makes it so I cant Blat some douche' in traffic without worrying how far its going to launch my bike forward.
I started messing around with some aluminum for the missing side cover last night before I went for a ride. not sure I like the shape of it yet. may try something different.
also thinking of making some custom roll bars for it (so I have decent highway pegs) and to keep my leg from getting trapped should I ever lowside it.
gotta see what I have around for metal to use, or if maybe I have to hack some old bike frame up for metal. I actually bottomed out the dual pegs last night trying to keep up with a 2008 triumph (yeah imagine that) and a 600 gsxr, needless to say I was last in that trio everywhere we went last night. There are NO sissy strips on the tires of this bike, I have had her as far over as she'll go and a little further than the manufacturer intended. I may rip the dual pegs off and just put them on when I need to work on her.
eventually need to repaint it but not sure how far in the future that is.
thinking about getting a much Fatter gas tank for the her (not only to increase the range on a single tank of gas but just because I think it would look neat). |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) BUT today the mission is harware, there is still a bunch of missing nuts and bolts that I just dont have in the shop so I need to take a cruise over to a parts/hardware store to replace some of these. should be pretty cheap.
cant spend too much time with my bike today, I promised the old lady I would tear down the 55gallon tank today and get the ugly stand out of the living room. I dont know how many of you have ever had saltwater tanks but its a lot more complicated than just draining the water. going to take a good solid 4 or 5 hours to do what I need to do today. |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) ugh, the biggest problem with building things so they last, is if you ever want to take it apart, its 10X the chore it was to build. I tell you PL500 (construction adhesive) works really really well. I have worn out my 3 batteries on both my cordless screw guns. now I have to wait for them to recharge. I couldnt tell you what possesed me to integrate the outlets into the stand. what a pain in the @$$. |

| Re: Rust demon: the ressurection (aka rebuild thread) replaced some of the missing hardware. noticed my fork seals are leaking pretty drasticly, they werent at first but the more I ride the worse it gets. now when I get on the binders (brakes) the front end drops right to the bottom of the forks. not good. should only be about $20 for new seals.
Anyone reseal forks before? is a huge pain in the ass or just a minor pain?
either way I am going to attempt it, just need to get the seals.
cant find a clymer or haynes manual anywhere locally, going to have to order one.
I'm going to take a cruis over to friend and friend and see if I can get a new shieldd for my helmet, riding at night with this old sheild bites because its so marred up. |
