Re: speedometer squealing

That's an odd one.

Have you tried to somehow lubricate the cable? Was it sitting for a long tme?

Re: speedometer squealing

It could be either the cable or the actual speedo

Usually when speedo cables start squeeling they are on their way out you can try lubricating the cable with a light oil (wd 40, 3 in one, or hoppes gun oil) no gaurantees on that though.

but it could also be the gearing inside the speedometer. if thats the case the grease in the case may be drying out, there is generally a light layer of grease applied to the gearing of mechanical speedometers, often dust, grime and dirt slowly build up over the years reducing the effectiveness drying it out. if you can open the speedo case and clean the old grease out you may be able to re-grease it. BUT more often than not if the speedo itself is squealing the bearings or seats for the gears is shot and the speedo will need to be replaced, because thing are no longer aligned correctly.

the easiest way to test it is to diwconnect the speedo cable from the speedo (at the top only leave the bottom connected) put it up on its stand and put it in gear, if it still squeeks with the tire rolling its the cable, if it stops with the cable disconnected its the speedo.
