Had exactly the same thing myself this week.
I built a DR500 engine (bad transmission) and then rebuilt the carb before putting any fuel through the fresh engine.
I turned the fuel on and it just poured straight out the carb overflow, so I turned the tap off as it looked like the carb had to come off again.
But I fired the engine up anyway first to make sure the build was good.
Then it occurred to me that perhaps running the engine might have jiggled the carb enough to close a sticking float valve. Turned the fuel back on and it's been just fine :-)
