929 Knife Edged Crank - Pics

For any who may be interested in seeing what a knife edged crank looks like. I found this crank for $150! Usually to have the knife edge an polish done through Falicon is around $700 alone!

This will be my next addition to my 929 (980) along with getting the transmission undercut. Unfortunately it will have to wait until next winter (I've dumped too much into it this winter already).

Careful Jake,

I think the dog may have taken a bigger interest in it.. You may be digging your back yard for it

Hey! That's not funny! Leave the dog out of this or he's going to be sent to you along with the exhaust! Explain that to the authorities!

Re: 929 Knife Edged Crank - Pics

Jake, I've never seen a knife edged crank before, and that's not exactly what I expected to see, so please excuse my ignorance... a couple of questions: how much weight was removed? Also, how much material? Do they balance the crank by itself when they do this process? If so is it spin balanced? What kind of rods do you have in mind?

Ride well.

Good questions! I myself was not familiar with what the term "knife edge" meant until Abtech answered my question last fall. As stated above, I bought the crank off of someone, so I was not the one who actually sent it in to Falicon to be reworked, there for, I'm not sure about how much weight was removed. I do have another crank laying around, when I have a chance I will weigh each one of them and let you know. It seems they did remove a decent amount of the material as you can probably see from the pics. They do balance the crank at Falicon on its own - not sure of the procedure (spin balaced), but you can see the holes drilled into the weights of the crank for balancing. Lastly, another reason I'm waiting until next winter is the cost of the rods I want, the Carrillo rods ($800) from a friend at a dealership.

I'll post the weight loss as soon as I get a chance to weigh the cranks.

Re: 929 Knife Edged Crank - Pics

Just to comment on the crank. I wouldn't really say that crank was knife edged in the classical sense of the word, as I have had cranks that truly had a razor sharp edge on all leading rotational faces. This seems more like a lightened, balanced and polished crank rather than a true knife edge job. There is nothing wrong with what has been done to this crank, and it is probably going to last longer than one that has been radically reshaped to reduce oil cavitation, as removal of significant amounts of material reduce the longitudinal rigidity at high rpm over the long run. I would also guess that if Falicon did the work, the journals have been deep rolled on a Hegenscheidt machine as well.

and your girlfriend too.

Re: 929 Knife Edged Crank - Pics

I was thinking the same thing. nothing like the radical stuff i've seen done to 748 cranks.
