Slow cranking/hard to start

Hi Everyone
I recently picked up an 03 954, runs nice, idles lovely. The problem is starting it.
Instead of cranking at the usual speed of most bikes, this one cranks slowly, like it would with a low
voltage battery. However the battery has a good 12.5 volts standing and the idle is 14.5, everything seems
normal there.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to start looking next?
Thanks

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

I would still check the battery. Voltage only plays a part, what happens when it is under load? I've seen batteries test good but fail when put under a load. If it isn't the battery, then it is either wiring or the starter.

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

First thought was it might be a dragging starter.

But, first things first:
How old is the battery, and what voltage does it dip to when you thumb the starter?
Also, what size is it? I believe the 954 calls for a yuasa 10s (or equivalent) or better.
Some guys will use a smaller battery for weight concerns, or trackdays. If you have a 8s, or something smaller with less cold cranking amperage, that could explain it too.

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

Easy way to test batt cranking power is jump it off your car, how does it start then? BTW no need to start car, jump leads with car engine off.

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

Hi people
So, the battery voltage goes to 9.50 ish when cranking which is too low, tested a new battery and is 10.50 ish whilst cranking, and sounds normal now.
So I tested the charge, tested the resting voltage but failed to test it whilst cranking which revealed the dud battery. Fail on my part.
Anyway, thanks for your help and suggestions in helping me crack that.
Happy and safe riding.

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

Forgive the slight highjack, but has anyone yet had experience of using Lithium batteries to replace lead/acid on the 929 or 954?

Re: Slow cranking/hard to start

I've used the EarthX brand in a number of bikes, XX, RC51 and the RR. The nice feature with the EarthX, when the voltage drops too low, it will shut itself off. To reactivate it, all it needs to do is sense 12 volts coming in. This prevents the battery from draining completely and killing itself.

Honda CBR929 CBR954 Fireblade Motobatt Maintenance Free Battery 20% Extra Power | eBay

But any new battery should fix the problem, if the problem is indeed the battery. Before buying another one I would go through the manual to test the battery and such first
