Valve adjustment cost?

I was quoted 4 hours ($70 per), sound right?

Most of that time will probably be in disassembling/assembling. We checked the valves on my RC last year with the aid of the service manual (the official Honda paper one, abtech ) at it's not too difficult. Might want to try tackling it yourself.

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?

I just did mine a couple of weeks ago and the hardest part was undoing the throttle cable. If you get the service manual it's easy. Don't bother with the cam chain tensioner holder (special tool). It can't be used while the engine is in the bike. If the cams need to be removed for adjustment you'll have to remove the tensioner.

What tool do you use to check the clearance?

I recently put in a set of hot cams myself, but I had to take it to the shop to get the clearances checked. I would like to do it myself and save $300 next time.

Hmmm... I used the special tool when I adjusted my valves. Seemed to work well.
I've got a little article I put together on how to inspect the clearances, but you really should have the service manual any time you attempt something like this. My valve inspection procedure . I think it's in the kb.

Removing the throttle cables isn't really necessary. If you remove the front brake perch and loosen the throttle on the clipon you can get enough slack in the cables to pull the far enough out of the way.

I had a heck of time getting that bottom cable back on the throttle body the one time I chose to remove them.
