cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

Hey guys I was riding back from the store when this guy almost hits me and Im like wtf. I stop and see my headlights not working. I get home and check the fuse and bulbs which are fine. The headlight doesnt work on low or high beam. Also the front turn signals dont work. There is no high beam or turn signal indicator coming on the gauge. The rear brake light DOES work. Its hard to drive around without the headlight. Im not too good with electrical problems. I have pulled the entire wiring harness from the tachomete down to the first connector. There is what I think is a flasher and next to it a relay? could either of those cause the headlight not to work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

you might be having the same nightmare that i did have last summer. exact symptoms. i took everything apart trying to test the wiring system and got no where.

turns out the actual problem ( for me) was in the starter switch. A solder point in the button area broke and that caused it. open the throttle controller side up and inspect the starter switch, it could be the same thing.

are you talking about the four wires on the bottom part of the switch? all the solder points are connected. this is frustrating

Double check those solder connections inside the starter button housing. You could still have a cold (cracked or broken) solder joint that looks ok. I had the same exact problem on my 93 600f2. And so did some other dude I ran into a year later. I really bet its inside the starter button housing.

This may sound stupid, how do I fix it?

Not stupid. You will need to get a soldering iron, not industrial strength. Like a 15-25 watt one from Radio Shack. Then find the cold or cracked/broken ball of solder and melt it to liquify the solder. Make sure when it cools and hardens after you take the iron off of it that it all stays touching the contacts that it should.

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

yeah just re solder them. i looked at a buddies service manual when i was doing it and spent an hour just following the wires of the headlights and stumbled upon the connection to the starter switch. i believe it was a white wire. can someone confirm??

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

One other thing to check is to make sure the starter button is fully releasing. When you start the bike it cuts the headlight power. I had the button stick about half way in (not enough to drive the starter) and had no low or high beam and no indicator on the dash. I don't recall if the turn signals/running lights worked. On the bottom of the throttle housing there is a small opening, shoot some contact cleaner in there if you find the start button sticking.

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

No, its not going to! There is no voltage getting to the the light bulb. Did you check that starter button housing yet? Just take the 2 screws out that are holding it together from the bottom side.

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

one way that i did my trouble shooting is that i had the luxury of a second 929 at my house ( nomads) and i was able to try his connectors. you may have to try that. if you know someone with another 929, just pull that wiring assembly out and plug it into yours. it's a long wire so it should reach if your bikes are close enough. i think you'll have to remove the right air duct cover to get to it.

This just happened to me. It was the black / red wire in the starter button switch, the solder joint failed.

Re: cbr 929 head light stopped working today??! HELP

This just happened to me yesterday. I opened the starter switch side, removed the red/black wire, stripped it, and re-attached it with a soldering iron. Still, nothing. What else could it be??
