bwhip : When I used to commute in SoCal I had all kinds of hostility directed toward me while splitting. Many people think it's illegal, but don't realize how many bikes are air-cooled and have to keep moving. It always puzzled me that splitting was legal but riding on the shoulder wasn't, but I guess with all the debris in it and so on, it's understandable.
The CHP officer that busted me for riding on the shoulder a few years back explained that it needs to remain clear for emergency vehicles, especially where there is a crash (as was the case that morning). I got a very firm reprimand and sent on my way, NOT on the shoulder.

Re: Mommy...why don't they like me? In dublin there isn't a specific offence for lane splitting, everyone on bikes does it. We have bus lanes which don't allow motorcycles in them, most bikers use the bus lanes and keep a sharp eye out for plod. I only had one incident of road rage, a vovlo driver tried to block me then tried to catch up when I was on the Motorway. I kept slowing down for him and then speeding off. what a prick!

On the lane splitting front - I think it's safer to lane split (when traffic is stopped) than not to. I have seen way too many cars crash into the back of other cars because they wer enot paying attention. It may only be a $500 crash, but if that was me and my bike, it could be way more serious. I'd much rather cu tbetween the cars, move up front, have a nice buffer of about 3 or 4 car sbehind me and then make sure they are all nice and far behind when I take off.
As for people trying to do stupid #### like open doors and swerve - I believe carbon fibre knuckles were created for a reason - hit the car door and leave the imprint of the knucles in the door I say. Or if you are really pissed, back fist the window - a lou dbang (and smashing glas sif you are lucky) will wake them up...

Re: Mommy...why don't they like me? Spark plugs ....Hmmmmm. I like the spring loaded punch. It is great for centerpunching steel before you drill a hole and it works real good on car windows.
