Smoke on Startup

After my bike sits for a few hours, It will smoke for about two minutes when I start it. I just bought it about two weeks ago, and I swear when I started it, there wasn't any smoke. Either way, I figure I'm hosed and need new piston rings. I've never tore into an engine other than to adjust valves, so I'm a little reluctant. Also, I noticed there is too much oil in the bike. Could this be the cause of the smoke? What do you guys think? Bad rings? How hard is it to get to them? Does the motor have to be pulled? Any help is appriciated(sp?)

Thanks

Re: Smoke on Startup

Try doing a tune-up and oil change.

What model and year bike is it and does it have fuel injection or carbs?

That will help with a solution.
I don't think you have a ring problem because the smoke stops after warm-up.

What color is the smoke?

Year, mileage, service record, abuse, whatever. Just a tad more info AFTER you get the oil level normal.

Re: Smoke on Startup

Drain some oil out. If you have too much it will blow by the rings and create smoke. You'll probably need to change your spark plugs, but you might not have to rebuild the engine.

And then there's this asshole...

Re: Smoke on Startup

It's a 2k cbr929rr with 29,000 miles, a salvage bike that I just got road worthy a few days ago. There is some engine noise during cold idle, but from what I read on this site, that seems to be pretty normal. I'm not sure of the smoke color, I'm color blind, but I can smell the oil, so it's probably blue (it's definitely not black or white smoke).

I've been told it was mainly a commuter bike with some 2up riding in the mountains, and never stunted, but I don't know if that is true or not.

Re: Smoke on Startup

I'll drain some oil today. I'm optimistic about the engine because it pulls REALLY strong and runs great, just a little worried because the bike is brand new to me.

Re: Smoke on Startup

It's a Honda, It'll prove to be a great bike for a long time. That really isn't a huge amount of miles.
If you can smell the oil then I would bet on it blowing into the filter. That's likely where the smoke is coming from.
The CBR's are good bikes. I ride an older 900 and wouldn't think twice about going anywhere on it.

Re: Smoke on Startup

if the smoke is white, it just condensated water in the exhaust. it comes from air when the exhaust cools down. if the smoke is blue it's engine oil.

if it's black it's too rich mixture.

if it's white like I assume it is. IT'S NORMAL.!
