Timing Chain Tensioner worn out....
Hey guys, So I have a 2000 CBR 929 with just under 15K on it. Since I started riding this season(I live in Seattle) around late april, I had noticed that if I was sitting still with the clutch in or out and I blipped the throttle to anywhere above 3k rpms there would be a pronounced rattle. My certified motorcycle mechanic friend told me it was the clutch basket was worn out, and with the recall these bikes had I had assumed so and planned on taking it out and checking it this winter. It would also do it if I was riding and I blipped the throttle to downshift. I was running Repsol 10w40 then. I just changed the oil to Amsoil 10w40, and now if the bike is cold or it has been sitting for a half hour and I blip the throttle it still makes the same rattle. BUT if I let it warm up, take off and roll to a stop sign and blip it or blip it to downshift it doesnt make the noise, it only makes the noise if I rev it up to about 8k and snap the throttle shut. SO my question is: Is the timing chain tensioner hydraulic and if so is there any chance it is worn out or do you think the timing chain is worn out or is it the valves are out of adjustment? This bike has been Babied its whoole life, no wheelies no stoppies no burnouts hardly ever been above 9krpms more than a couple of times. Any ideas? I am gonna pull the clutch apart and check the basket anyway but I dont think that is the problem.

Re: Timing Chain Tensioner worn out....
Yes, the cam chain tensioner could easily be bad. They go all the time, but the chances it messed up your cam chain itself are next to none.
It could also just be the HTEV if you still have the OEM headers. Those are plenty noisy.

" Is the timing chain tensioner hydraulic"
No, it's mechanical, spring tension makes it to tighten up, if there is any slack, and there is system that doesn't let it to loosen up ones it has titened up some more.
It's pretty simple, just remove it and play with it.
Honda manual is talking about spring tension holder special tool, but that is just a screw driver and you need to use to hold the spring tension in when you are installing the adjuster back

Re: Timing Chain Tensioner worn out....
No HTEV Is removed with HAAS eliminator, have a yoshimura bolt on, and a power commander USB. If it is Mechanical then it doesnt really make sense as to why it would be loud when it is cold and wuiet when it warms up, so maybe it still is the clutch basket????

" so maybe it still is the clutch basket?"
if pulling the clutch lever changes the sound, then it's the basket.

Re: Timing Chain Tensioner worn out....?
Well I would think so, but noisy when cold quiet when hot....makes no sense. I am gonna pull the cover and inspect the basket and change the clutch discs anyways so I will see the basket then, but I am gonna fiddle with the tensioner for the chain as well. I have about a million things to do on this bike that all take the same amount of dissasembly so I will save it and do it all at once then I guess....But has anyone else had a tensioner fail? This rattle sounds like the chain but I dont know...
