Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

own a 954, but since no one has yet replied with a 900 i'll give it a shot. first off, is this someting that recently started? onne thing i've noticed on my bike, and seems to be the concensus is that these are not quiet bikes. the clutch basket is noisy, the top end is noisy, and all of this is normal. saying you have no loss in power leads me to think maybe this is the case.

more information on where the noise is eminating from would help narrow things.

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

I may be a little late here but...I had a 900rr with a "CAM TENSIONER" problem. I had a "knock" / "rattle" coming from the right side of the engine -- if I remember correctly. In any event, the bike stopped running. The tech explained to me this was a common problem with the 900rr. What I heard was the cam tensioner (I think he said cam chain too) slapping around.) Anyway, it cost a few bucks but the bike was fine. Hope it works out for you.

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

My 900RR makes knocking sounds and well... f it i gave up trying to figure them all out. I may replace my cam chain tensioner also just to be sure it's good.

For one when the bike is cold the entire valve train makes a knocking sound ( normal for these engines 893CC ), for two the clutch makes it's own knocking sound... so how in the hell do you know when something is really actually wrong internally with the engine, other than power loss and really most of my power loss problems are carb related.

I also bought a new clutch set and am going to replace the bearings the inner and outer bearings on the clutch.. now this really sucks because now i need a specail tool to remove the clutch basket nut because i don't have an air compressor and impact gun. Rant rant rant That inner bearing costs $60 !! for ONE bearing.

I don't want to buy that specail spanner tool to hold the clutch basket from turning while the nut is being removed. Any good ideas on how to keep the basket from turning ?

Oh yeah if your thinking about installing a jet kit on a 893cc don't do it.. my bike runs like **** now even after i adjusted the carbs using a synch gauge. I'm going to rebuild another set of stock carbs and use them.

Can you be sure the battery isn't dead or drained and that is why the engine won't turn over?

Could be cam chain tensioner if it's way loose valve timing will be so far off the engine won't fire up. Hopefully your valves didn't come in contact with the pistons. If they did... engine rebuild time.

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

ive had a quick look at the bike today and battery is fine but the starter motor wont even turn ive tried the old tap with a hammer but didnt do nothing if it is the engine would it be easier to rebuild or to buy a second hand engine.

Also if i do buy another engine would a 919 engine slot straight in or would i need to change the harness and everything else

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

does this noise come in at around 4000rpm? and does it sound like someone is nocking it from in the middle with a very small hammer? if so it may be a big end bearing

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

I had the same frustrating noise on my 2005 Blade, checked the cam tensioner, the clutch basket as well as the shims to no avail. Finally removed the clutch basked to check the big-end bearing. The bearing was badly worn as there was noticeable radial movement. i had exceeded the 12 000km service interval by 1000 kms and Honda specialists advised me that the oil could have lost its viscousity due to this as a result the bearing under stress had been damaged.

How did you check a bigend bearing by removing the clutch?
Are you talking about one of the clutch bearings?

If you remove the clutch basket you are able to see no 4 conrod pretty well and also remove the big-end cap. I was able to remove both the shells and see the amount of damage that was caused on the bearing.

Re: CBR900 RR Knocking sound from engine

Without removing the sump?
I think you'd be hard pressed to blame a rod bearing failure on 1000kms past the service time.
Did you inspect the other bearings as well?

i also have a 900 RRs, i do hear a knocking but i think its pinging, at least i used to listen to the "same" noise on the bandit. she`s 16500km, took the bike to my mechanic and he checked it for compression and was all good, so i didnt got it checked for valve clearances.
if the valve clearance were bad would that affect compression?
thank

Pinging is more of a light rattle than a knock.
If the valves are too tight then yes, as they won't close fully and will eventually burn so that they still won't seal even if you correct the clearances.
