| New Honda CBR 1000 Owner Hey everyone, I am really pysched about being part of this forum. I just turned in my 02 Hayabusa for a brand new CBR 1000 all black. Unfortunately the weather has been un-ridable up here in the northeast. My question if anyone can help, What is the recomended break-in period for this bike. Max RPMs etc. Also I want everyones opinion on the best slip-on for the 1000. Being price weary also. I only heard of scorpion so far. I was always a yosh and D&D fan because how it made my BUSA sound. Also the best slidders to buy for ease of putting on and safety and looks. Is there any dedicated sites for the CBR accessories for windshields, slidders, slip-ons etc. Thanks guys and I look forward to beingpart of the growing CBR/Honda club. Nyflex02 from NY/NJarea.. |

I rode into work this morning, although I think I wore every piece of gear I own. Doesn't matter, the bike is still sweet. |

As far as the break in period goes, there are tons of arguments on the right and wrong way to do it.
Despite what people say, I will always follow what the manufacturer says as far as the break in goes. My friend just bought a ZX-14 and is going through this right now. For his first 500 miles he couldn't go over 4000 RPM. He's between that and 1000 miles now and can't take it over 6000 RPM. After that, I may have a tougher time keeping in front of him. |

| Re: New Honda CBR 1000 Owner All good ideas, I totally agree with doing what Honda says to do for the break in period, considering they built the damn thing and did a hell of a job. As far as the ZX-14 goes I was very tempted to get that instead. But Honda quality won me over. Was always a suzuki fan and still am, but for the money the CBR wins hands down. Looks pretty good too. Now to get all the goodies that just top it off. But what to get.. I will read on. |

For a big bike, it doesn't really feel that big. A lot more nimble than I would have thought. That being said, the same guy is considering picking up a ZX10 for a more sporty ride. |

| Re: New Honda CBR 1000 Owner Congrats!
As to the breakin rules, after having spoken to several engine builders worth their salt, they say not to follow the manufacturers guidelines, but to ride the bike with varied loads up to 50% of the bikes redline for the first 150 miles. Also, they say not to load up the bike (high throttle at low revs).
At 150 miles, change the oil and filter, then do the same thing as before with the riding style, but ride the bike at up to 70% of redline. Don't just sit on the highway either logging up miles. You really have to vary the revs and load. Change the oil again at 600 miles and check the oil filter for metal particles (cut it open with a hacksaw). At 1600 miles (2000k's), the oil should be changed one last time and you're good to go.
I just had my Subaru STi motor rebuilt due to a spun big end (rod) bearing and when the builder took the motor apart, he found that my bores were heavily glazed which affected the power my car made. He said this occurred because the owner followed the manufacturer's conservative break in procedure, plus the car must have sat in a lot of traffic. He did say that the reason for the glazing was because if you don't rev the car/bike and get the rings to expand, they will never fully seal against the bore, and you'll ultimately lose power. Finally, breaking in the bike as he suggested does not limit the lifespan of the bike.
HTH.
Cheers,
Sime |

| Re: New Honda CBR 1000 Owner I just bought a new 2006 cbr1k and love the thing. Sold my 954 (which was a great bike). I bought Shogun no-cut frame sliders that look awesome and was easy to install. I know they probably aren't as sturdy as standard mounts but I just couldn't bring myself to cut into the fairings at this time. I have never heard of the break in as described above (50%, then 70%, etc.) but does sound like more of a plan than described in the owner's manual. Not much there but don't jump on it until 300 miles. A few things I added to my bike....hotbodies flush mount front blinks, clear alternatives rear integrated blinks, jardine fender eliminator, and Puig light smoke windscreen. I have been extremely pleased with the Puig windscreen. Optics are great and quality is top notch. Now if the darn weather would break so I can put some miles on the thing. |

| Re: New Honda CBR 1000 Owner
Just bought a brand new 1000RR too. Wheather is crappy here too so I just have a little over 200Km on it. Owner book says to avoid quick acceleration for the first 500km. That's it.
I am trying to avoid revving it higher than 6000rpm for the first 1000km. What I did, however, is that for the first 75km, I tried to do as many roll-ons as possible, from about 3-4000 rpm through 6000 rpm. I did them mainly in 4th, 5ft and 6th gear, loading the engine reasonably. Apparently, it is a good way to make sure the rings and other parts will sit properly and allow for better performance/durability in the future.
I will probably change my oil soon and change it again at 1000km. I will use Honda oil, as it is what the manufacturer recommends. Avoid synthetic oil at least until 2500km.
For sliders, although it's a pain in the butt, I recommend cut-out sliders as they have less chances of breaking other parts of your bike when they hit the ground (I will buy Woodcraft or shogun).
My 2 cents, hope it is useful. |

| Re: New Honda CBR 1000 Owner I have not gone over 7000 rpm and when on the hightway just keep verying you speed. Stay away from synthetic oil for the first year in my opinion. Had very bad luck with syn. oils in the past, even changed it way before its life? Enjoy your ride, I sure love mine. |
