98 cbr 900RR problems

Let me start from day 1. The bike started 3 times and ran for about 1 hour total then wouldn't start. A friend told me that because i wasn't moving the stator wasnt able to recharge the battery so the battery needs recharging. Sound right? Ok charged the battery and tried to start all i got was clicking from under the seat. Ok friend came by and checked the charging system and said its 1 of 2 things the reg/rec or the stator but he felt it was the reg/rec so i replaced it. Got the reg/rec today and put it on myself, battery was charged and so i thought i would give it a shot. The bike started right up, took it on a quick ride about 30 mins and back home. stopped at the store for a drink and it wouldn't start up again. any ideas cause its clear my friend is guessing and its costing me $$$$. Help.

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

The initial problam sounds like a low battery. At idle the battery will not get any charge, in fact the bike will be drawing current from the battery all the time its running. Every noticed the headlamps get brighter over about 3,000rpm? thats where the charging circuit is starting to work and charge the battery. cars are the same but the revs vs charge tends to be a lot lower and battery is bigger.

Why it would not start out side after your ride I'm not sure. If it was real hot you could have vapour-locked the carbs, and it will start ok when its cooled a bit, could be flooded, could be the battery is knackered, too many options to speculate...........

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

I had a 1998 but didn't have any electrical probs, although some Honda models did have probs with regulator/rectifier the cbr900 isn't one of them that I know of...........

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

the search button is your friend, this has been talked about in several other threads.....
if your stator goes out it'll cause your R/R to work harder causing it to go out.....now that said, you need to charge the battery for awhile, then take a voltmeter and start it... test the battery while it's running, the battery should show a min. of 14v anything less your stator isn't charging the battery hence you have a bad stator and need to replace it....you also need to test the 2 yellow wires on your R/R and make sure thats working as well which if you replaced it, it should be working fine

Might be you just need to replace the battery. One died on me once and after charging it and getting an appropriate volt reading, it still wouldn't hold a charge. Had to go buy a new one. Hasn't had a problem since.

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

You said 3 days ago that it was running fine and you were taking it for a ride. So I guess my first question would be this: have you actually been riding it around in the last 3 days and it just did this today? If so, I'm wondering if its possible there's a short somewhere in the wiring such that it ran okay after you replaced the parts, but after sitting for a couple days it drained itself.

Yep... bad battery. That seems to happen to me each time the voltage r/r has gone bad. I try to recharge the battery with either a battery tender charger on 2amp. or trickle charge it at 1 amp. Dumb batteries won't hold the charge. Currently I don't have this problem and hopefully never will again ( fingers crossed).

Do you read or just skim over the good parts. He just replaced the battery. And I don't think a bad battery would start a bike and then die in 10 seconds.

Did you go with the factory RR? Just been through the same exercise with my old blade and found that the non genuine items just weren't stacking up

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

No I didn't ride (on my way out the door and job calls, had to work 12 - 16 hrs each day) so haven't had time to work on it. I used all factory parts. Battery fully charged and i will be going out in the morning to try to start it up.

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

For whatever it's worth, I had a similar problem with my car a couple years ago. Had to have the battery replaced and a couple days later it wouldn't start - just made a clicking noise. Turned out when they installed the new battery there was a gap in the contacts and it drained. Could be what happened with your ride. I'd check the charge on the new battery and if it's not charged, go back and double-check all your connections.

Re: 98 cbr 900RR problems

I had a very similar issue with my 99 RR, every now and again the ignition would sound as if the battery was dying/dead.

Drove me crazy for a few months!!!!!

It turned out to be the contacts to battery, natural erosion occured between the contacts and the terminals. I'd have a go at cleaning the battery terminal contacts. (not saying it will fix it but will help up the voltage)

As well as checking for water ingress in fuse tray, check for continuty, make sure nothings shorted to the frame.

Do all the lights come on ?? If so, check ure ignition fuse.
