| Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? i'm riding 929 last night, about 10 minutes into the ride i noticed my gauges looked like they were getting a bit dimmer, then my digital speedometer stops displaying #'s all together, and my tach suddenly stops working. Finally the bike just shuts off directly behind a cop car on the bridge i was going over.A simple ride to blockbuster video to get a movie, cost me a $90 towing fee for less than 8 mile tow to my house , not a good night.Anyway, i have already replaced the stator once on my bike, it has about 8k miles on it with no problems (Electrosport Brand) until now....my quetion is, the first time my stator went out,the bike ran fine until i shut it off, then it just would not start up, i never lost power to my gauges, bike never shut off on me while riding, like it just did last night...any chances this could just be a crappy battery ? and could a junk battery ( a bad cell ) cause this problem ? I'm hoping it's just the battery,as i find it hard to believe the Electrosport stator went out after only 8,000 miles ? I have just charged the battery to until the charger sated it was 'charged' , connected a multi meter and started the bike, no jump in voltage while running ....could this still possibly be a bad battery if i get no jump in voltage ,or does it definitely sound like the stator again, or reg/ref ? can't get a stator today, and wanted to go to bike night/riding with friends tonight.... i have the flow chart from electrosport already, and will check for loose wires, etc.... thanks

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? Check the voltage at the battery with the engine stopped. It should read at least 13.5 volts. If it reads around 12 your battery is dead. If it reads less than 12, you have a dead cell. What was the voltage reading when you started the bike back up. At about 3000RPM you should be getting somewhere near 14.5 volts. If you do not get this reading you have a problem in your charging circuit. Then you can go from there. The stator has no circuitry to speak of. If you ohm it out and it reads within specs, (0.1ohm-1.0ohm) it is definately good. they are either in spec or not. that would only leave the Rectifier, regulator. These go out a lot. the diode packs just die usually. This should get you where you need to go. |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? voltage is 12.94 with engine off , when i start it up and run it at idle, voltage is 12.08 .....when i rev it up to 3k while running, voltage stays around 12.08
is it possible the battery is just junk now ? after being on the charger , it does charge up and start the bike though, would it even do this if it just had a bad cell ? If it's the stator, i'm going to buy another Electrosport and take the other one out and send it back, this should not be going out after only 8k miles of use.... |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? if it had a bad cell, it would not start the bike. check your ohm reading at the stator plug. I know it's a b**** to get to, but that will tell you a lot |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? what should i set the multi tester too ? there are a bunch of different symbols on it, i did it once before, but forgot which one to switch it to....i'm assuming it's the ' 2m' setting on the 'resistance' section of the meter ? Thanks |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? the lowest setting on the resistance scale. you are looking for 1 ohm or less. It could differ slightly because it is not a factory unit. but not a huge difference |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? sounds like the stator to me as well, I also replaced my stator with one from electromotorsports, but I only have put about 4k on it since then! I was under the impression that the battery starts the bike but the stator is like the alternator on a car, it sustains the bikes power and recharges the battery! |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? ok, on my multi meter it reads from the top in the 'resistance' section
20m
2m
200k
2k/
200/)))
which one should i choose out of these to set the switch on ? Also i'm asuming i just leave the black and red leads plugged into the same inlets, as they were when i used to check battery voltage ? Thanks, probably stupid questions i know, but i threw out the paper work i had describing how to check the stator, so it's back to square one.... |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? Use the 200 setting. You have to unplug the stator from the harness under the seat. it should have 3 pretty thick wires going to it. I am not positive about which 2 terminals you need to check, but between 2 of them, you should have between 0.1 and 1.0 ohms. If you get an OL, it means you have an open circuit (burnt wire in the stator) if you get less than 0.1 it means you have a short. either way, if it is not within that range (0.1-1.0) you have a bad stator. By the way, I double checked and voltage should go up gradually up to 5000RPM. at this you should be around 15 volts.
Tell you what send me your email addy and I'll shoot you that section of the manual. It is a little clearer than I can be on here. |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? listen (and learn) from carolina. don't listen to someone else until you actually diagnose it is either the stator or the R/R.
carolina knows what he's talking about. (at least about this...he's proabably a nut job regarding other topics) |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? well i ordered the new stator, went to go and insatll it late friday night, and low and behold - the wires where i connected my last stator going to my reg/rect were big time corroded, as in right through the wires! Cut out the blue /green corroded sections of wire and reconnected, and it charges as good as new again (knock on wood) ......check your connections if your having a charging problem, could be something as simple as this ! Guess i'll send this new stator back ,and get a badly needed chain/sprocket kit now .... |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? Good news Renegade. glad to hear you are back on the road. Can't stress the loose connection point enough. It's one of the most common issues I have to troubleshoot in my field. It becomes one of the first things I look for these days. |

| Re: Need Help Fast ! Does this sound like a bad stator ? Carolina, it almost looked like "battery" type corrosion on the wires, was kinda strange to see the wires like that....could just plain water cause that , it looked like something pretty corrosive ate through the connection ? weird |
