Another 929 with not functioning fuel pump

Dear fellow Fireblade runners.

I have had a problem with my transmission (came out of 2nd gear, damaging a gear fork and the gear drum), and after re-installing the engine and hooking up the wiring, the engine wouldn't start, due to a not working fuel pump.

Here is what i have done/know so far:
- the starter engine works
- the ignition is oke (we are getting a spark!)
- the engine cut relay is fine (measured)
- the bank angle sensor is fine (measured)
- the fuel cut relay is fine (measured)
- the fuel pump is fine (hooking it up directly 2 the battery: the 929 fires up!)

With the switch on contact I hear the relays clicking.
When I measure the Voltage at the fuel cut relay I find 2 wires to have 12,6V; one wire has 0V and the brown one (according to me that one is coming from the ECU) has 11,2V.
I am far from a electrician, but the 11,2V of the brown wire seems to be not right (or is it ).

When I measure the voltage of the fuel pump connector I find the green and brown wires to have 12,6V, and brown/black one is 0V.

Does anyone have a clue what might be the cause of my problem

Searching this forum I have found several "hints", like the 0,5W 3,9V Zener Diode. But when this diode is bad, wouldn't there be no spark too

To complete the info:

It's a 2000 CBR 929 with HISS, and a RED ALERT alarm system.
We did not cut any wires (only disconnecting the connectors).

Thank you in advance!

Rick

I just signed up, and havent even recieved the new to me 929. But if you hear the pump priming and you have power to the relay. From years past with other FI bikes. I would look at a clutch switch, kickstand saftey, and a Tip over sensor. All of those will stop the bike from starting and very easily over looked.

The brown/black wire is only for the level sensor so it shouldn't have power unless the tank is near empty.
Since the pump works when isolated clearly something is telling it not to run.
From memory I don't think the fuel pump will prime if the HISS isn't triggered off.
The alarm system I have no idea if or how it prevents the engine running.

Re: Another 929 with not functioning fuel pump

I have found the cause of my problem.... and I am shaming myself!

There were 2 connectors (black) swapped....

Every connector has its own unique color. When there are 2 connectors with the same color, the shape is different. At least, that's what we thought...

But the good thing is: it fired up and I can drive again!

Thank's to the repliers!

I did exactly the same thing. All the connectors are unique except for those two and I plugged them the wrong way round. You may now find that you've blown the circuit in the pump that triggers the yellow low fuel light on the dash... I did. I picked up a second hand pump off ebay to solve the problem as it was clear that the problem was in the pummp and not in the dash/brains.

Damn... I hope that didn't happen. I will have to clear my tank first to see if I have the same problem.
Do you know where the other black connector is from?

Not from memory but everything else worked so I didn't give it another thought.

Re: Another 929 with not functioning fuel pump

Damn, my fuel level sensor is broken!
Is the sensor replaceable, or do I have to renew the complete pump?

Couldn't tell you I'm afraid. I pulled the pump from the tank and it didn't look like the sensor was anything I could unplug and leave the rest functioning. As I use the bike for getting to work I just slung it back in the bike and used the odo to tell me when to refuel and then stuck a search on ebay. I got one after a month, swapped them over and the light worked again.

There is a test in the honda workshop manual which you can use to test if the dashlight is working. It's highly likely you've blown the sensor as you did exactly what I did but the test takes a few minutes to do. You can get the workshop manual off ebay or if you're stuck let me know and I'll look it up for you. From memory you need to take the tank off and short out two of the connections on the fuel pump connector (obviously don't just try all combinations out as the pump is powered from that connector too ) and the dash light will light up.

Regards,

Mark
