Engine Pinging Noise

I just bought a leftover 2007 cbr1000rr brand new. It has about 200 miles on it now and recently I've noticed what sounds like a pinging noise when I accelerate. I'm new to this kind of bike and want to make sure that nothing is wrong. Being that it only has 200 mi I feel like it shouldn't be making this sound or any other strange sounds. Are there any sounds a bike may make that sounds similar to this? I haven't pushed the bike at all yet seeing as how I am still breaking it in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

It seems more like a pinging type sound similar to an older car engine. I haven't had the chance to test it at higher rpms yet so all I know is that it happens in the lower rpm range. Since I'm unfamiliar with the bike I will most likely just take a ride over to the dealership and have them check it out. Thanks for the reply!

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Well, if you just recently purchased it, and its under warranty...I would take iit to the dealer and have them check it out just in case. Now would be the time to do it, rather than decide that its nothing and have it break after your warranty is up...cuz thats how it always seems to happen. haha.

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Yeah it would seem to happen that way huh. Everything breaks as soon as you pay it off or warranty runs out.

Did you check the oil level?

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Are you running it below 3000 rpm's? Mine will rattle/ ping under unless I keep it up above that.

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

It would seem to happen around 3000 rpms when I get it up to 4000 or so it seems to go away but then again it's also harder to hear at that rpm. A friend told me it was normal at low rpms in a higher gear so hopefully that's all it is. Sucks that yours is doing it too but it's a little comforting to hear that others are doing the same!

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Mine makes the same pinging sound as well, I use 98 octane fuel. So far I have done 1000km and it seems to only do it in the lower revs, especially taking off from a stop. It is due for initial service so I will quizz the mechanics about it then.

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Seems like we have the same exact problem. Mine doesn't seem to do it when the engine gets a little power to it. After reading a little more of the manual it does say that the engine may ping a little during low end acceleration, but it's not normal when its running steady. Mine is headed in for the initial maintenance soon too so hopefully some answers will turn up.

Woah, 98 octane? I can only get 91 here in Oregon, USA. That's nearly jet fuel by comparison.

Re: Engine Pinging Noise

Talked to a Honda mechanic today, he said all the tapping, knocking, and pinging sounds are quite normal... to a certain degree. He said the materials the engines and other components are made of are just noisy not to mention the fact that there really is no sound proofing and also that the engine is directly underneath you so you notice things a lot more. If the bike is going in for service and there is still concern talk to the mechanic taking care of your bike and make sure there is nothing wrong. Hope this helps all others concerned.
