929 weight upgrades instead of new bike.

So I get the 929 back from the shop all finished and cooled out and love it but wouldt mind making even lighter (I have a weight obsession)
Aside from 3 grand in new wheels (just had mine powder coated yellow) what would be a good way to shed some pounds. I was thinking about race body work which I could make street legal no problem but Cant think of any good way otherwise to lose pounds since the bike is damn light already. I would love to get it under 400 pounds!

Re: 929 weight upgrades instead of new bike.

I have the same obsession - my 929 is under 360lbs currently without fuel :-)
Mine's in race trim though of course.
If you never carry a pillion you can lose a bunch of weight by replacing the rear subframe with a rider-only one. I made mine very easily out of some 10x20mm aluminium bar all bolted together for ease of repair.
Narva and others do very light LED tail lights and indicators and I run a CBR250RR headlight which pops into the front fairing for road use.
Race bodywork can save you quite a bit as well as making it easier to work on.
I listed everything I've done to my bike here - Turning the 929 into a full time track bike
In the old days Superbikes used to run a moped charging system to do away with the stator and rotor. I don't know if such a setup could cope with injectors and fuel pumps of modern bikes but that would be a good weight saving.
I'd like to make a fibreglass airbox still and the 1000RR tank cover fits nicely with cutouts for the intakes so a smaller aluminium tank down low will be a nice weight saving.
I'm still chasing a magnesium front wheel at a decent price though.
My ultimate goal is MotoGP weight and power so I can experience it.
I have a T25/28 turbo for the power side of it when I'm finished racing the old girl :-)

I was thinking about a race tail and sub frame but would hate to losse the trunk but the more i think about it the less I need it so it may be in the future.

Hmmm...well, actually with a single-seat and a race tail you'd have an enormous amount of room.
Depending on what sort of weight you wanted to carry you could make a subframe to support it that extends off the back of the seat frame with a floor.
Of course, you'd have to make a water-tight lid for the tail unit or maybe even modify the tail for an OEM seat cover to fit into.

I would just leave it simple as a clean solid tail no trunk. I really don't care much about extras wich is why I have no rear seat or pegs. Heck I wish I could get rid of the starter and battery and use a kick start.

Re: 929 weight upgrades instead of new bike.

Bump starting these is pretty easy due to the fuel injection.
Can be a little more difficult on icy cold mornings though :-)
You can't do without the battery as you need the power to fire the injectors and prime the fuel pump.

Re: 929 weight upgrades instead of new bike.

I'm actually toying with an idea of using 3.5Ah drill batteries so I can just slot a fresh one in before each session :-)
Also, I weighed the '06 1000RR rear wheel last week and it's nearly 450gms lighter than the 929 wheel which is a good saving for a bolt-in item. I haven't pulled the front tyres off yet to compare the fronts.
I was surprised to discover that identical brand new Corsa's in 180/55 and 190/50 weigh exactly the same so there's no advantage to running the narrower tyre unless you also run the 5.5" wheel.
