Back in the Saddle

I have returned to the fold after a 20 year absence. Went to the used bike store this weekend, just looking, and left with a 1994 CBR 900 RR in mint condition (Honest, mint) with 14K. The sales guy was excited for me and said to just drive around the neighborhood slowly for a couple of days to get acclimated to the bike (Last bike was Suzuki GS 750 80's model). So I tried that for about 15 minutes, then went out for a 2 hour ride that saw me at 125 mph for a quick blast near the end and the promise of many more rides in the days to come. I'm already thinking of mods and wanted to know if anybody had an opinion on the Vance and Hines SS2R exhaust system for this model? Thanks and glad to be back (Golf is for Weenies!!!).

Re: Back in the Saddle

I own a mint 93 with 5000 miles on it. the bike came with a full stainless exhaust with a yosh slipon, sounds and run great.
Have fun and watch out for cagers.

Re: Back in the Saddle

Had problems logging back into forum after registering. Yeah, I bought it from High Five Cycles and have already put 2500 miles on it. My SUV has hardly moved in the last few weeks. When I bought it the store guys said a lot of people were interested in it, which helped me to pull the trigger so fast on the purchase. It's a great bike. I see where you have a 94 already, so maybe you can give me some advice. I'm thinking about a new clutch kit and cable since the downshift from neutral to 1st is a little clunky. I can't tell if there is any slippage, seems ok during acceleration. The cable adjusters are just about maxed. The tranny shifts great up and down through the gears but the engine seems noisy compared to my old Suzuki GS 750. I've seen posts talking about the 900 RR engine noise, what has your experience been? Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: Back in the Saddle

Shifting from neutral to 1st has always seemed to be a little clunky to me, even when I bought one brand new back in '93, so I think that is just the way it is. As far as engine noise is concerned, mine is also bone stock and it seems to be pretty quiet most of the time. There is a little buzzing here and there around certain RPM ranges, but nothing out of the ordinary. Since you bought the bike with around 14K on it and already put 2500K of your own, it would be a good idea to get the valves adjusted and carbs re-synched. Honda recommends that service done at 16K miles. That may solve all of your noise issues.

Re: Back in the Saddle

Thanks for the reply. Just got back from the garage after putting on an aftermarket muffler. Quite a difference. Bike takes off smoother at lower RPM's than before. Nice rumble too. I'll be doing a complete bike service session this weekend. Fluids, adjustments, and a new chain and sprocket set if UPS makes it in time. Scutfargas, I saw the pictures of your bike in your profile and it was like seeing double. Sweet bike. I may be biased but the Black, Red, and White color scheme looks great and stands up well after 14 years in my opinion. I picked up a scratch on my big CBR sticker on the mid fairing right side and found cheap replacements at xtremedecals.com for future reference.

Cool. What do you plan on doing with the OEM muffler?

Re: Back in the Saddle

It's got some scrapes and scratching, looks like from a tip over while parked, not road rash. I was going to keep it for down the road if I ever resell the bike, but I plan on keeping the bike for a long time even if I pick up another CBR 600 or 1000 in 4 or 5 years (or a Ducati if my mutual funds recover). I picked up a polished OEM canister on Ebay for $85.00 also. I saw a couple of OEM canister's lis
